Great Gable viewed from Wasdale Head is unmistakable. Situated at the head of Wasdale where it presents a giant triangular gable end, it is also at the head of Ennerdale and close to the Black Sail hostel.
The most popular routes of ascent are Wasdale Head via Sty Head pass, or from Seathwaite via Sour Milk Gill taking in Green Gable since it's in the way.
Every Remembrance Sunday a memorial service is held at the plaque installed on the summit rock by the Fell and Rock Climbing Club in memory of those, and especially its members, who died in the First World War and those following it. In spite of the sometimes inclement weather many hundreds of people make the climb to hear the nondenominational service, in what has to be the most moving of settings.
