  • "6th time back at Rothay cottage , we love this cottage for its location to all amenities and many lovely walks straight from the door."

Cottage is not the most up to date but still very comfortable and was very clean. Everything worked perfect including the shower (see below review) no issues with temp control at all. We will be returning again in 2024 in April & December.

  • "The cottage was shabby with carpets and couches stained."

The bathroom definitely needs updating and getting a shower is an impossibility as the water temperature ranges from freezing cold to boiling hot with no constant temperature. The only plus size was the location of the cottage but this would not be enough to make me return

They said it would be perfect if there was WiFi. Location was great and neighbours were fab and no issues with parking.

One negative, bathroom needs a refresh, main issue the shower - any less water pressure and it'd be almost impossible to have a shower. Overall a great place to stay and those views are fantastic

  • "Location was superb, a very short level walk into Ambleside town centre and all its amenities."

The little terrace itself is very dark at night (we were there over New Year) so either leave the outside light on to help guide you or take a torch if you are unsteady on your feet. We had no problem parking on the adjacent roads. Inside the cottage was spotlessly clean and with all the facilities anyone could need. There are quite a few stairs up to the lounge and second bedroom on the top floor but they are worth it for the wonderful views - we spent ages just looking out of the window! If I had any criticism, and this is really nitpicking, a few home comforts such as ornaments, books, or some Christmas lights/decorations would have made it feel even more homely and cosy but we appreciate why these are missing. Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our week at Rothay Cottage, have no complaints, and would return.

  • "The bathroom is getting shabby and wasn’t clean."

Dirty blind, dirty light fitting; grouting on shower is very grubby. WiFi should be supplied. Tv is small and an option of catch up service is expected these days. Location is great, the extension to the kitchen is great.

  • "The cottage was delightful!"

After a 7hour journey from Dorset it was lovely to find a cottage that was so welcoming. It took us a while to find the cottage as we were looking for a red door as in your advertisement picture ~ the neighbours have obviously changed their door !! ( perhaps you could update your picture ). We have been to the Lake District many times and this was by far the best accommodation we have stayed in. As stated above, it was clean and well looked after ~ the view from the lounge was brilliant. It would have been convenient to have WiFi . Perhaps your advert could mention the fact that there is none. Needless to say, we managed!!

Amazing view of Wansfell from the lounge window. Centrally located for shops and restaurants. Great base for numerous walks. Very clean and has all the facilities needed for a relaxing break. The cottage is very impressive compared to several we have stayed in. We have no hesitation in recommending it. We shall be back!!!

Thank you for your feedback. I'm sorry if you feel the cleanliness was not up to standard. We would have loved the opportunity to rectify anything for you if we had of been made aware. The cleanliness has not been brought up as an issue before but we have passed this onto our cleaning team to look into. • "Over past 10 years we have stayed in the cottage several times."

It’s location for walks cannot be beaten. Shops and restaurants are on the doorstep. Despite its central location in Ambleside it is very quiet. The view whist sitting on the sofa is absolutely beautiful. You can see people on the top of Wansfell ( good eyesight helps) Try Lucy on the plate restaurant for something different. The Golden Rule pub has a unique atmosphere .The Tea shop at Rydal Hall is my wife’s favourite. ( We have visited too many to mention over the years) We have stayed in numerous holiday cottages in all areas of the country but none of them is as special as Rothay Cottage.

Four"irritations": 1. Only 1 key. That could be fixed easily and inexpensively and would make life a lot easier 2. No WiFi, not really 21st century 3. Recycling is a nightmare. Coming from a place where recycling is a part of life, finding the recycling centre then having to go to a separate site for glass!!!!! 4. The parking permit was on the floor with the post. Only found it after calling Sykes (& waiting for some time to get through)

Only point to make would be that the toilet room fan is quite noisy but you get used to it after the first night. The sofas could do with a spruce up they are fine and the lack of wifi is not a big deal, you go to the Lake District to enjoy the scenery not to stare at a device all day. Would recommend it to anyone looking at staying in the area. Although with steep stairs and a challenging driveway up to the property it wouldn't be suitable for those lesser able.

The views from the living room, which was on the top floor, are wonderful, though it would probably be a good idea to make it clearer in the description of the cottage that the living accommodation is on 3 floors (kitchen on ground floor, bathroom on first floor, living room on second floor). We had no problems with lots of stairs, but some guests might struggle.

We found the layout really quirky and fun. It was a great place to stay One thing to mention (and no it's not the wi fi as we enjoyed not being tied to the iPads) the main bed was not as comfy as the bed two single beds and perhaps the main bed could benefit a new mattress protector. Will we come back? You bet we will, it was fab! Thanks for a great week in The Lakes.

  • "Love the cottage, 3rd time we have used."

We have a few comments which could help: 1. We were focused on walking all week and only discovered on Friday evening that there were no recycling facilities at the cottage. It would help if, in the instructions, it showed exactly where the closest recycling location is. Sadly, bottles, plastics and paper went into the landfill rubbish 2. Four light bulbs were blown. We tried to call the owner on Saturday morning but no answer so had to leave a note for the cleaner. A mobile / email so that we could send a message would be useful One thing ref parking, it seemed impossible to get a space in the roads after between 6:00 / 6:30 and around 9:30. Despite all that, the cottage is great.

  • "This is a lovely little terrace cottage."

The property was very clean, and the area, while close to the village shops, was generally quiet. There was noise from the next door rental on one night, but the owners of this property can't do anything about that. We liked being able to walk and to shop so conveniently. The property does need some minor TLC. The drying rack is broken and there was no lid for the tea pot. Also the outdoor seating area had not been cleaned post-winter. And we were left with 2 rolls of toilet paper for a week! Otherwise, we have no complaints, and really enjoyed our stay.

Parking can be a pain but that's what you get for being in the centre of Ambleside. This year we always go a space when needed although occasionally a few mins walk away. One small point, the same one we fed back last year, a second front door key would make life a lot easier as well as feeling we were covered should the unthinkable occur & a key was lost.

About the location

AMBLESIDE

Grasmere 4.4 miles; Windermere 4.7 miles; Keswick 16.7 miles.

Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.
