The views from this property mesmerized is it was amazing. The kitchen was well equipped, the bed was super comfortable. We really loved staying here and definitely will be back next time we stay in Ambleside. We would definitely recommend booking here should you want to stay in Ambleside

  • "Fantastic comfortable cottage in a perfect location so close to Ambleside."

We unfortunately arrived after dark and found it extremely difficult to locate the property, the directions say to turn right on to Low Gale and then turn immediately left into a courtyard....this is incorrect, it is the second turn into what looks like a private driveway of a large house! This made the start of our stay very stressful as we were driving and walking up and down the road in the dark and rain after a long day and a long journey

  • "A wonderful place to stay."

Lovely to be in Ambleside and avoid using the car wherever possible. In spite shops only a 2 minute walk when darkness falls there is not a light to be seen and you could easiy be fooled that you were in the middle of the fells. The views are fantastic and can be savoured from the balcony if it is warm enough or through the patio window if not. The property is well equipped, comfortable and cosy. This was our second week here and we will definitely come again

  • "It was a lovely home away from home for us as a couple."

Had all the mod cons we required. It was a perfect spot, close enough to the town centre to make trips to the shops, pubs and restaurants in minutes but set back enough from the main road to feel like it was much further away. There was a small amount of road noise to the front but we were able to sit outside on a couple of occasions when the weather allowed without too much disturbance. We've booked to go back early next year as we were very happy with it.

What a fabulous Apartment. I have stayed in Ambleside on several occasion and this is a lovely spot. The property is so close to the main shops and restaurants. The patio area is secluded and private with great views. The bonus with this property is the bedrooms are to the rear so you get very little noise from the main road, which can get very loud though the night. The apartment had everything we needed, was clean and very comfortable. We will definitely return . Thank you for a lovely stay. PS ; a knife sharpener would be helpful as some of the kitchen knives needed to be sharpened.

Thank you. All sharpened now Property Owner

We totally agree. • "We really enjoyed our second stay at The Walkers Retreat."

The only reason I have given 4 stars, is because the family above us had a small child, who cried a lot through the night, so sleeping was difficult. And the lower rating for comfort is only because the sofa is leather and we both kept sliding about. Other than that we love Walkers retreat.

  • "Beautiful views and close to shops."

Comfortable bed but furniture looking a little "tired ". Lots of books and DVDs. My daughter and I had fun playing Scrabble. Nowhere to put groceries but lovely big fridge freezer. Also nowhere to put clothes in the single bedroom. We will definitely be staying at Walker's retreat again and will recommend it to friends.

So glad you had a nice holiday You are quite right, the furniture is tired. We have a brand new sofa , TV , rugs and cushions arriving next week. The beds are certainly nice and comfortable and very new - so these will all be there for you to enjoy on your next visit The wardrobe for the single room is at the top of the stairs, just outside the room. Best wishes , the Walkers Property Owner

  • "PROS: Excellent Location and beautiful views of the local hilltops."

location especially good to walk into Ambleside. CONS: - Parking, it's a long way to reverse in, in the middle of the night (do NOT drive in forwards and try to turn around at the end - no lighting and you're likely to catch your car on so many corners) - Maybe I have been spoilt with Airbnb, but No washing powder/tablets is so annoying, as is No shower gel etc - to have to go back into town and get these basics - Why ? - CHECKOUT - these timings of 5pm check-in and 9am check out are ridiculous! .... especially when you can't leave anything in the dishwasher and all has to be put away. - Rooms - very small - and since 90% of cupboard space is labelled "OWNERS ITEMS" you have to leave all your stuff on the floor around the bed - which is a nightmare as there is only max 2ft of space in the room! (try going to the bathroom in the middle of the night and NOT tripping over all your stuff). this could be an excellent little cosy place (justifying the higher price tag) if only the owners were more customer focussed.

We’re glad you liked the location and beautiful views Apologies for the check in and check out times- these have been altered since COVID, in order to allow the extra cleaning procedures required - and I think it’s now fairly standard with all holiday cottages in busy areas. ( leaving the dishwasher on when you leave will not be a problem). The bedrooms are small, but there are wardrobes and shelving for guests. We have taken a few cupboards for cleaning things and spares etc. Property Owner

  • "Walker's Retreat is a superb apartment - fitted out to the highest standard, clean and comfortable."

When you find the secret stairway down through the garden into the main street, you realise how brilliantly situated it is for shops, restaurants and buses - all literally minutes away. We have stayed in Ambleside many times but this was our first visit to Walker's Retreat and we were really impressed. A word of warning though, the apartment is part of a small complex which sadly has little in the way of sound-proofing. The walls and ceilings are paper-thin and we could hear everything from the surrounding apartments. It wasn't that our neighbours were particularly rowdy but, because of the thin walls, etc. we could hear every door closing, voices in conversation and T.V. sounds. This was partly remedied by the purchase of earplugs, but couldn't prevent a few sleepless nights during our stay. The noise was a shame because otherwise this apartment would be absolutely perfect.

Walkers retreat perfect location for walking and central to Ambleside. However the apartment was not clean it smelled damp, human hair in bathroom and bedroom, dirt and dust in bedroom under beds; as old receipt from 2018 found by bed, balcony furniture required cleaning Bed most uncomfortable. not one to complain usually but seriously would not return to this apartment. On a positive note walking was amazing with spectacular views, highly recommend Ambleside as a location for walkers.

We are sorry that the apartment was not up to standard. On receipt of your feedback we immediately made an owner inspection. We did a deep clean and replaced the patio furniture with brand new Kettler table and chairs. We are sorry you didn’t like the bed, but it is a brand new memory foam bed and mattress purchased only this year. It’s hard to get one to everyone’s tastes. We have spoken to the maintenance company and passed on your feedback regarding the cleaning. Since then we have scored very highly on cleanliness in guest feedback Property Owner

About the location

AMBLESIDE

Grasmere 4.4 miles; Windermere 4.7 miles; Keswick 16.7 miles.

Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.
