This place really is special, from waking up to the horses, rabbits running around and the lovely rolling hills, we are already planning our next visit. 10/10. Thanks for all your help Allyson

Spacious and well equipped with everything that you could want including facilities for the dogs. Welcome gifts for the dogs too. An enclosed garden at the back which made letting the dogs out stress free. Allyson (the owner) was very welcoming and helpfull. It was lovely spending a week at the cottage, spending more time there in the afternoons and evenings than we planned due to the weather.

A lovely review, thank you. Sorry about the inclement weather, but glad that both you and the dogs enjoyed the cottage and gardens. Hope to see you back soon. Property Owner

Gardens are pet secure so no need to worry about that. All furniture, decor and appliances of high quality and beds are very comfortable. Would love to come back in summer months to enjoy the outdoors.

  • "Glenridding Cottage is a real gem."

A very clean, well equipped and cosy place but above that it is super dog friendly and well located. The garden is big and totally secure…even for two mischievous cocker spaniel escape artists and there was a dog gate to prevent them going upstairs….this made things so much easier!! There were plenty of dog bowls and even some treats were left for them as a welcome gift (lovely touch!). There is also “mud daddy” dog shower which was great as they did come back muddy after walking. The cottage is in a great location for walking - from the door (the Lady Anne’s Way trail passes the door) and also plenty of places a short drive away including High Cup Nick (Dufton) and Low and High Force (both Pennine Way). Unfortunately we had terrible weather on our visit but the cottage has loads of games, DVDs and a lovely fire so after shorter walks than we’d planned we were able to comfortably hunkered down. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this cottage and hope to return in better weather to take greater advantage of the walking (and garden….which really is lovely)

What lovely feedback. We are delighted you enjoyed your stay at Glenridding Cottage, despite the awful weather, and found the cottage a comfortable place from which to explore the surrounding area. Glad you liked the Mud Daddy! You would be most welcome to return Property Owner

It is situated amongst lovely countryside, a haven for walkers and nature lovers with a wonderful variety of bird life and corresponding birdsong. In Spring the dawn chorus is amazing and lasts all day. Allyson is a first rate host, friendly and informative who treated us like honoured guests, with homemade cake and a fine bottle of Shiraz to welcome us. Our dog too was warmly welcomed (not simply ‘allowed’) with a selection of treats. The expansive gardens either side of the cottage are secure and perfect if you have children and/or dogs. The cottage had superb and modern facilities and was extremely spacious. The small room downstairs with the large picture window and seat was a great place to sit and relax and my son made good use of it while we there. Allyson and Mark live next door and they are superb hosts and have literally thought of everything including treats for our dog and some wonderful things to welcome to the cottage. The cottage itself was fantastic, everything we needed was catered for and Allyson certainly has an eye for the finishing touch. The layout was great and the room sizes were perfect for up to 6 people I would say, even though there was only two of us (and two dogs). Allyson and Mark live in the adjoining cottage and are on hand to help with any questions without being intrusive, they are both very friendly and Allyson tells a great story - very funny :). Allyson thinks of everything, for the humans and for any dogs in the party, and on leaving asked us if there was anything we wanted during our stay, which she hadn't provided, honestly, we couldn't think of anything! What the website doesn't show you is the beautiful big garden, which is in two sections, so you can limit where your dogs go, if you want to. The garden is completely enclosed and private, which was very important for us, having two inquisitive dogs. We were lucky with the weather during our week and actually stayed in the cottage and gardens on two days, sunbathing and lazing around, relaxing, which we have never done before - I personally loved the snug where I would sneak off too for a bit of me time, when it got too hot. We spend a week in The Lakes every year and this cottage was the best we have stayed in and we will be going back in the future. It's always a bit of a gamble, choosing where to stay, but we struck lucky this year for sure.

Wow! What a great review which we really appreciate, thank you. We can't claim to have arranged the weather for you, but we are glad you enjoyed it! You would all be most welcome back anytime. Hope the boys are well. Property Owner

Allyson was a perfect host, leaving a little gift for our dog and also a few treats for us. The property was spotless, extremely comfortable and well looked after. We don't think there are photos of the garden area on the listing, so this was an added bonus upon our arrival to see three separate garden areas to enjoy. We managed to park our large car out the front no problem, tight against the front wall. Despite its rural location, there are several dog friendly pubs and restaurants to eat in locally within a 5-10 minute drive in nearby Brough, Kirkby Stephen etc. The Pennine Hotel's pizzeria in Kirkby Stephen was probably the most dog friendly place we have been to eat. Within 15-20 minutes of the M6 South and North and about 40 mins from places like Keswick, this is an ideal and unspoilt location. Would recommend the half hour drive across the Pennines to Middleton-on-Tees to see High Force waterfall. Will definitely return.

The Cottage is so beautifully decorated and equipped. Though there was only the 2 of us and we used very little in the way of kitchen equipment and rooms, there is so much the property has to offer. Great doggie wet room.....for rubbing down wet paws after a days walk in The Pennines or The Lakes. Washing machine. Spare towels. Cupboard fully stocked with every game you can think of to while away a wet dull afternoon. Welcome gifts for two and four legged guests....amazing cake and bottle of shiraz and tin of doggie treats, Allyson thinks of everything to welcome you to their cottage. The Snug...a small 1 seated room to sit and look out at the view is a must. My treat every morning with a coffee. Archie our puppy loved the view also albeit the local sheep was his interest! The garden has 2 areas with the bottom being fully enclosed even for the most inquisitive Westie! It would of been lovely to seen the garden at it's best mid summer with all of the plants, shrubs and containers in full bloom. But unfortunately October weather took the best out of the blooms. Fully equipped kitchen, Allyson has thought of everything. 6 seater dining table. Dishwasher. Fridge freezer. Microwave. Guest Information book and pamphlets on local visitor sites. Take time to read Guest Information book. It gives you everything you need to know on the property and the local area. A stair gate at the bottom of the stairs kept the boys downstairs at night, usually they sleep in our room and it's in the House Rules no dogs on beds. We are in someone else's home and respect their wishes. Excellent addition. Other dog friendly properties need to adopt. 3 x bedrooms and as I mentioned only the 2 of us so we only used the king size room. Very comfortable and tastefully decorated as were the other 2. Bathroom also well decorated with over bath shower, ample hot water. Living room saw a woodburner fully stocked ready to fire up and plenty of coal sticks and wood if needed. The Cottage is located in a no through road hamlet containing about a dozen other homes. Horses and sheep are your neighbours with plenty of rabbits on their walk to send the boys into a frenzy! Parking for 1 and advise to park tight to the wall. All in all, this is by far the best cottage we have stayed in with Allyson and Mark always ready for a chat over the fence. Would we recommend? I think my review says it all.

The standard of the accommodation was outstanding; comfy, clean and decorated to a high standard. The garden is beautiful and fully enclosed which was reassuring for our dogs. All rooms are an excellent size, and the snug was a favourite to look out on the beautiful views of the Pennines. The location was spot on, with easy access to the Pennines, Lake District or Yorkshire Dales. The owners were really welcoming and on hand for anything we needed, they gave great advice for walks, parking etc and the wide range of locations accessible from the cottage. The owners are very dog friendly and the layout of the cottage is equally so, as you can go straight through the kitchen and into a boot room to clean the dogs if needed. The kitchen is very spacious and the living room is really comfy with a wood burning stove when needed; not that you will need it much due to the 3ft thick walls and central heating. All the bedrooms are very spacious and light, and the decor is very modern but the cottage still has that traditional feel to it. There is a lovely peaceful garden at the front to watch the scenery and horses in the field opposite, but there is a large fully enclosed garden at the rear to let the dogs sunbathe and wander. I have two large greyhounds so they need decent sized walls to discourage them from any thoughts of escape and I was very pleased with the rear garden as the dogs had no means of escape. You get enough fuel for the living room stove for a couple of nights and the owners top it up for a very reasonable £4.00. There is even a quiet reading room off the kitchen with a picture window overlooking the field at the back for a bit of peace and quiet from everyone else if needed. Overall a fantastic place to stay for us and the dogs.

About the location

APPLEBY-IN-WESTMORLAND

Penrith 14 miles.

The historic town of Appleby-in-Westmorland lies in a loop of the River Eden and is overlooked by the North Pennines, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with the Lake District Fells showing on the western horizon. Set at the heart of the lush Eden Valley and steeped in history, this is one of the loveliest towns in the north of England and was originally the county town of Westmorland. Appleby is nestled between the Lakes and Yorkshire Dales, so guests can enjoy the contrasting scenery of these two National Parks, plus numerous walking and cycling opportunities as well as the fantastic leisure centre in the town. Appleby has a wonderful selection of quality independent shops, cafes and delicatessens selling locally produced food and crafts. The picturesque street of Boroughgate, with some interesting old buildings, is at the heart of the town and links the well-preserved Norman Castle with the fine medieval Church of St. Lawrence. Appleby is a major stop on the Settle-Carlisle Railway, which is one of the most beautiful railway journeys in Britain, and still today many of the old steam trains wend their way along this line and over the historic and awe-inspiring Ribblehead viaduct. With the delightful Ullswater and the magnificent Lake District within easy reach, this is an ideal holiday location.
