  • "We had an enjoyable comfortable stay."

It was in a very convenient location. It was cold to start but the heating worked very well and was soon very cosy. In spite of its size the cottage was spacious enough for our needs.

  • "Owner provided a bottle of wine and milk, fresh flowers and a box of chocolates."

The cottage was "compact", especially the upstairs. The central heating was effective in November time. There was a log burning fire, but not enough wood for one evening, extra wood was on offer at £6 a bag. The out of season price was competitive.

  • "Absolutely perfect weekend away from home!"

The cottage is beautiful, very clean and well equipped. The added bonus of a welcome gift of flowers, wine, milk and biscuits was very much appreciated. The village is idyllic and easily accessible from main route with lots of places to travel to within less than half an hour. We definitely recommend and will return in the future. Thank you for a most enjoyable stay!

The cottage was lovely felt like a home from home with some really nice touches like the welcome pack of goodies. We found some good walks from the cottage and for the foodies a few independent shops in Penrith, Lowther Castle is also well worth a visit.

  • "The cottage was in an excellent position for walking in the Dales, Lake District and Pennines."

It was easy to get to Appleby for shopping and cafes. We were also within a short walk of the local shop. The cottage was in a very quiet area. The cottage was a very good place for a two week stay - well equipped kitchen, spotlessly clean throughout, cosy and comfortable. We made use of the nice garden and met the friendly neighbours. Parking was ideal for our small car.

  • "Bed very comfortable."

Cottage ideal as a base but wouldn't recommend if you had small children as stairs very narrow and bathroom no bigger than a closet could do with a few more cooking pans and had trouble reading the dials on the hob. Very quiet area but have stayed in Kirby Thore before as have family near by. Parking is a struggle we have a Audi A6 saloon and only just got it in the parking area so anything bigger you have no hope.

Parking very tight especially for someone who hates parking like me. Would have like a dishwasher but that’s because I hate washing up. Lovely little village and The Bridge bistro was fabulous

  • "Just a small issue about parking."

May be better to advertise as parking for one small car. If I had had a larger car it would not have fitted onto the tight parking plot. Other than that that’s cottage was beautifully presented, exceptionally clean and the arrival gifts were very appreciated. The cottage had everything you needed for a pleasant stay.

  • "I felt that there was a large shortage of necessary essentials ie toilet rolls , bin liners, ."

I would have preferred to have the little things available instead of the choc mint cake and wine they kindly left us. Disappointed that there were no bins either rubbish or recycling!! We had to make a journey to a recycling centre outside Kirkby. It wouldn’t hurt to invest in a decent tv and entertainment package, due to COVID not everyone wants to venture out in the evening and it was exceptionally difficult to find something to watch.

  • "A lovely, well equipped cosy little cottage."

The shower room although compact is perfectly laid out in the space available. Arrival touches were a lovely treat. The garden is a sun-trap which was great. The only issue is the parking (especially if a local has taken the space without leaving a note on screen). You will have to do a bit of manoeuvring to get in/out. Definitely would stay here again

  • "A lovely cosy cottage in a great location."

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay there and would choose it again as an ideal base for the Lakes and Dales. Welcome pack and already-made-up log burner were really nice touches. Bathroom and bedroom quite small but ok for a short stay of a few days. Parking space very tight so needs considering if you're coming in a very large car or motor-home as I think you'd struggle to park next to the property. Overall really good and would recommend to people.

About the location

KIRKBY THORE

Appleby-in-Westmorland 5 miles; Penrith 9 miles.

The small Cumbrian village of Kirkby Thore is situated within easy driving distance of both Appleby-in-Westmorland and Penrith, due to it being close to the A66. Kirkby Thore sits on the site of a Roman cavalry camp, with amongst other items, Roman coins, sandals and urns having been found in the area. Today, the village offers a church, a shop with Post Office, a bistro/pub and a petrol station. The historic town of Appleby-in-Westmorland is located in the loop of the River Eden, in the heart of the Eden Valley. Appleby is a major stop on the Settle-Carlisle Railway and every June the town plays host to a three hundred-year old Horse Fair. Also within reach is the bustling market town of Penrith, which was once the capital of Cumbria. The town offers a number of specialist shops, sandstone buildings, attractive cottages and gardens, along with a wide choice of pubs and restaurants. With wonderful Ullswater, the Lake District National Park and even the Yorkshire Dales National Park to visit, Kirkby Thore makes a convenient base for exploring the area.
