  • "We had a wonderful stay at Moss Side Farm."

The cottage was cosy but roomy enough for 7 of us. Louise (owner) is easy to contact and very friendly. A special thankyou to her for taking the trouble to post back a loved "teddy". Everyone we met was so friendly and the area is beautiful. The younger ones loved playing with the dogs and the hot tub was lush. Thankyou.

Warm, welcoming and just so perfect for our Christmas break. The children loved the farm, we all loved the star gazing and I loved the pure beauty of this traditional farmhouse cottage. The whole experience was just what we needed and the location is perfect to travel to lots of beauty spots. Highly recommend

The enclosed garden was perfect for our two dogs. There are plenty of walks around although the nearest pub is 7 minutes away in the car and the nearest shop some distance. The location is beautiful but be mindful that there is a campsite which was close to the end of the garden which was fine by us. The hot tub was wonderful after a days walking.

It's homely, comfortable and we were made so welcome. It's just as one would expect from a Lakeland working farm. You can tell that every effort is made here for our comfort and for an easy, friendly holiday. Love the Farm, all the animals and dogs, just chilled and fun, and beautiful!

  • "Moss side has the potential to be a fabulous holiday cottage."

The location for exploring the southern lakes is great and the hot tub in the back garden is a lovely welcome back. A welcome pack and some general instructions would have been great on arrival as we spent the rest of the week guessing what was required of us with rubbish/hot tub maintenance etc). Unfortunately I suspect people before us had been smoking and the smell had lingered which did not help the greeting either) The mugs in the kitchen were fabulous for a homely brew, sadly the rest of equipment was a bit sparse, only just enough sets of cutlery for each of us, so we either had to wash upon run the dishwasher between every meal (we also had to buy a pan to do breakfast pancakes), however we do cook most meals when away, so maybe not an issue if you eat out most of the time I hate to list niggles - all in all it was what we needed, but did not feel quite like the 'treat' we thought we had paid for

  • "I found this cottage to smell bad and was damp."

It was very unclean. The owner also approached us and assumed we as a family had left the top gate open. When we said we didn't do it she then went on to say well its never happened before. This upset myself and my family. To practically being called a liar is down right rude. Our children never touched the gate and jumped it at all times without touching the latch. On the advert it states that our animals should be well behave however one of their collies bit my daughter and her boyfriend on the ankles while we were outside our property. What I will say is the other animals on the farm were beautiful and friendly. We will miss them. The cost for this farmhouse is very expensive for what you get. Disappointed on accommodation and treatment from the owner on that one occasion stated above.

What can I say..............If your teenage children go round the farm letting the animals out I cant simply smile and pretend everything is fine. Farms are not a free for all playground, they are places of work and safe homes for our animals. While we welcome guests to enjoy their stay on the farm, we have to have rules to keep everyone safe. One of these rules is please dont let the animals out of their field/enclosures. Fine, its not actually written anywhere but its simple common sense. If those 8 horses that were let out had made their way to the main road they could have caused a serious accident. You loved the cottage on arrival, you were thrilled with it, even came round and knocked on my door to tell me so. Funny how opinions can quickly change. Even though I was boiling inside, I kept my cool, I was polite, I was professional. I treated you all with respect, as a host, thats what I do. As they say in these parts "There's nowt as queer as folks" says it all. The cleaner couldnt beleive her eyes when she entered the cottage on your departure. We couldn't make out if it was food stomped into the bedroom carpets or vomit! Liquid soap smeared all over the shower rooms, etc etc. We have taken pictures. Im not going to continue on this track. Enough said. Property Owner

Being in a working farm was lovely. From being greeted by a cute dog, to having goats eat outside of the window added to the experience. The kids loved it. The cottage was what you want from a country cottage and was very spacious. The hot tub is set in a nice private garden and a treat after a day out. The owners were very friendly and helpful. The cottage is set in a beutiful quiet part of the Lakes, but is only a short drive to the more popular areas. In all this was a very enjoyable week in a lovely cottage.

The hot tub was great, the bedrooms were all nice and comfortable and the animals wandering around were very entertaining. Only downsides were that the water pressure was quite low in the showers and toilets (but probably to be expected in such a rural location) and Wifi wasn't good so joining a Teams meeting had to be done by mobile 4g which just about coped. We don't have a car so travelled by train to Foxfield and the disused Coniston line is a really handy way to get to the cottage.

  • "I’ve got to be honest."

The level of cleanliness was disappointing, especially considering the current circumstances. We were told we could not check in until 5pm due to the extra cleaning that needed to be done due to COVID. I seriously doubly that any extra cleaning took place. The bathrooms were quite mouldy, we had to purchase bleach to clean the bathrooms and kitchen sink areas. There were thick layers of dust and cobwebs everywhere. Skirting boards, window sills and cooker was also dirty. We had to request for the hot tub to be emptied and refilled after only one use because it was cloudy, foamy and full of scum. However, the owners were nice and any requests were met. I would stay here again if the level of cleanliness was improved. The cottage is well equipped and the kids loved the animals and stream nearby. We loved the location, however the listing stated that Cottage is not overlooked by the campers when it actually is. The views are stunning and the walk to Broughton village only takes about 40 min.

In reality there are tents to the front , side and rear clearly visible from every window and overlooking the garden and hot tub. There is a constant stream of people wandering in the yard and walking dogs along our boundary fence a few feet from the house. The listing was a complete misrepresentation of the truth. We did not come to a remote cottage in a quiet bit of Lakeland to be entirely surrounded by people, dogs and general hub bub. Person in charge completely uninterested, Sykes not answering the phone. • "Settle in, meet Louise the owner, then enjoy the farmhouse, and the surroundings."

Remember its a 400 year old building, rustic, and charming. The hot tub is brand new from Cumbria Spas and is a top of the range one, wow. Didn't expect that, though we knew on booking a hot tub was there, not a new one though with lighting, various jet settings etc, it will take many hours to warm up after you arrive due to the owners cleaning it out for you to use, so it may be a late one the first night if you wish to enjoy it. Was a pleasure staying on a working farm, and the walk into the village about 2 mile and worth it, three good pubs too, though for real ale drinkers the stand out one is the Manor Arms, great pub, everyone so friendly, you know its good when at 4pm on a Wednesday its busy, 8 real ales on offer, and think 7 of those were £2.80 a pint, reasonable in the Lakes. A really good walk is towards Woodland, and beyond, you could spend all day exploring around that area, and its straight from the lane to the left as you leave the site, you will see the signpost for it. All in all a very enjoyable week had by all, laid back, and you don't feel intimidated by the place like some I have stayed at, its not 5 star luxury, just a 5 star stay, will without a doubt look to book it again in the future.

About the location

BROUGHTON-IN-FURNESS

Millom 7.5 miles; Coniston 9 miles; Ulverston 9.5 miles.

Dating back to the 11th century, Broughton-in-Furness is situated in the south western corner of the Lake District and is just six miles from Coniston Water. There is much to please the visitor such as a pretty, cobbled square complete with a splendid horse chestnut tree, enclosed by shops, pubs and homes, many of them Georgian in origin. The village provides an ideal base for a walking or climbing holiday, with ample opportunity to explore the rugged beauty of the Duddon Valley and the quieter Lake District fells. Norman Nicholson, one of Britain's finest 20th century poets and William Wordsworth, both immortalised this area in their writing and poetry. The village was home to Branwell Bronte, brother of the Bronte sisters, for a short time. The Furness railway line runs from nearby Foxfield and makes for an ideal day out, travelling the west coast of Cumbria. Set amidst the charm of the Lake District and close to the sea, this attractive town makes an inspiring choice from which to further explore a magical heartland of silver lakes, lofty towering peaks and lonely, heather-clad moors.
