The Duddon valley is a beautiful area and despite the rainy weather we visited a number of picturesque villages and lakes. On occasions when the weather was too bad we were just happy to be in and enjoy the special amenities in the cottage. The owners could not have been more helpful and pleasant to deal with.

Well appointed, good kitchen. Lovely bedrooms- all spacious. Loved the quirky bathroom up the stairs. Perfect for our dog too. Secure garden, floors that were ok for a bit of mud, and a lovely scullery that enabled us to dry boots, jackets etc after walks. Don't let the situation next a busy road put you off. We had no issues with noise.

  • "A great property if you like old buildings."

We were intrigued by some of the doors and stairs that led nowhere. You made an excellent job of modernising the building without losing it's character. My one complaint would be the difficulty in getting hot water from the handbasin tap in the bathroom, but assume that is a plumbing problem. The garden was totally unexpected in a positive way, we loved it. Would love to know the history of the property.

Ideal location with a delightful village close by with a couple of pubs, bakery, post office and butchers. Very thoughtful owners with a wheel barrow to transport luggage from parking area to cottage. Definately recommend it to friends and family and as previously done, many years ago, return.

The property is beautiful, in a fantastic location. Everything was well cared for and perfect for our group of 3 couples. The kitchen is well equipped and spacious (and thank you for the bottle of fizz!), bedrooms are again very sizeable and comfortable and the bathrooms were clean. We loved the path up to the house - it felt so secretive and secluded entering that way! We would all love to return sometime and would definitely recommend the property. Thank you for an excellent stay.

This is probably the best equipped holiday cottage we've ever been in. Great to have a dishwasher, washing machine and dryer too. Stunning big rooms, beautiful features and a great garden. As the listing says, it's right on a main road so can be noisy, especially in the early mornings and the beds could do with upgraded mattresses.

  • "Duddon cottage is a beautiful cottage with good sized rooms and well equipped."

we found the bathroom with the freestanding bath and large shower a bit of a challenge to access as the steps up are steep through a narrow doorway. not really good for elderly, or someone with mobility difficulties. It was really hard getting out of that bath too. It looks fantastic but not that user friendly especially if you are built like a 6ft 2"rugby player. Plenty of parking in lovely wooded garden . It does get quite a bit of road noise at the front of the house as it is on a main road. Overall it is a wonderful place to stay and really cosy.

  • "A very clean cottage with all the facilities provided."

We made use of the garden furniture and enjoyed the garden pathway. Enjoyed the cottage features, large fireplace, latch doors etc but at the same appreciated the modern facilities. Being bungalow dwellers we enjoyed the wide staircase and improved our fitness level! We really liked nearby Broughton and it was ideally situated for our needs - a definite bonus. The cottage handbook provided lots of relevant information, as did the kitchen board, but we would have loved to learn a little of the cottage’s history eg when it was built etc. Just a couple of minor suggestions - the torch needs a new battery and there is now no longer a beach cafe at Silecroft! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Beautiful stream in the garden. From the moment we arrived we knew we'd want to visit again. We had a power cut on our last evening due to a storm. The owner Louise was so helpful and provided us information on the situation and when it was likely to be resolved. She also helped us find enough candles to keep us going. It made our final night really special and adventuresome! Just can't say enough about this beautiful cottage.

  • "Absolutely loved the cottage and the location was ideal with super friendly locals."

My only faults would be the springs could be felt through the mattresses (we used a duvet from one of the spare beds as a mattress topper) and the dining room light constantly flickered so we couldn't use that room to eat on an evening (tried a bulb change but still had the same problem) The cottage was super clean though and the en-suite shower was amazing after a day in the hills. Loved the wheelbarrow and strip lights in the garden too.

  • "We did enjoy our stay at the cottage but did feel that there were a couple of things which should be addressed."

You refer to a deep clean taking place prior to us taking possession of the cottage. There was certainly no deep clean - I have a picture I took but there's nowhere to download it to on here so I will email separately. My in-laws had dropped some tablets down the back of the bedroom drawers - it was a sight to behold. Cobwebs along with dirty clothing - which did not belong to us. Secondly, the cottage is situated on a very busy main A road - there is constant noise of traffic, and not just cars. As it's a main road, there is a continual flow of tankers and large lorries passing through. Not only that but the cottage is situated near to the traffic lights on a bridge, so it gets backed up as lorries can't turn around the corners of the windy road - so not only do they block the daylight when sitting outside the lounge/dining room windows - the drivers can see you sat down. We actually live in a small village where it's very quiet - so this element was very disappointing. Also with us having a small dog made it quite terrifying to open the front door in case he escaped as he would have been injured or killed had he got out - the pictures on the website certainly deceive you into thinking it's a quiet little country lane!!

In response we will address the issue of the cobwebs behind the chest of drawers at the next changeover, this is not to our expected standard of cleanliness. The text on the webpage accompanying the photo advises some road noise maybe heard, this is generally around a commuter traffic time window. It is not our experience that there is constant noise of traffic and continual flow of tankers and lorries blocking the daylight and it has not been referred to as such by any of our previous guests over the last 5 years. The cottage has a large rear garden with an enclosed fenced area suitable for dogs and children, we have repeat bookings cited for this reason. The front door remains locked, a key is of course provided so guests are in control. We responded to several queries throughout your stay promptly and courteously. Otherwise we hope you had a good stay. NB. The road surface has been renewed in January and passing traffic is noise is reduced. Property Owner

Three double rooms with super comfy beds and 2 bathrooms. The cottage was very clean and had all that we needed for our stay. The garden was safe for our lively dog. We decided to park our car at the front of the cottage to unload when we arrived as it is quite a walk from where you park your car at the back of the cottage to the cottage (if you get my drift!). We loved our week here with so much to do and see in the surrounding area. Days were filled with walks in the hills, lakes or at the beach. Evenings were spent in the garden relaxing with a drink or two, bbq’s or cooking in the well kitted out kitchen. We had a great time and would highly recommend..

The first bedroom was the largest bedroom which was grabbed by our relatives over from Australia. then we looked at the second bedroom, I found a door in the corner of the room and again. WOW!!! The en-suite to this bedroom was up four steps into another room and it was perfect. The third bedroom was perfect for our son. The main bathroom was again clean and tidy and ideal for the others. The stair case was so wide, you would be forgiven for thinking your were in a grand house instead of what looked like a small cottage. When I say small, it was deceiving. All the rooms were deceptively large and comfortable. It even had a utility room which was big enough to swing a cat. About the location

BROUGHTON-IN-FURNESS

Millom 7.5 miles; Coniston 9 miles; Ulverston 9.5 miles.

Dating back to the 11th century, Broughton-in-Furness is situated in the south western corner of the Lake District and is just six miles from Coniston Water. There is much to please the visitor such as a pretty, cobbled square complete with a splendid horse chestnut tree, enclosed by shops, pubs and homes, many of them Georgian in origin. The village provides an ideal base for a walking or climbing holiday, with ample opportunity to explore the rugged beauty of the Duddon Valley and the quieter Lake District fells. Norman Nicholson, one of Britain's finest 20th century poets and William Wordsworth, both immortalised this area in their writing and poetry. The village was home to Branwell Bronte, brother of the Bronte sisters, for a short time. The Furness railway line runs from nearby Foxfield and makes for an ideal day out, travelling the west coast of Cumbria. Set amidst the charm of the Lake District and close to the sea, this attractive town makes an inspiring choice from which to further explore a magical heartland of silver lakes, lofty towering peaks and lonely, heather-clad moors.
