  • "A great place to stay loads of room for us to eat and sleep."

A lot to see and do and shops not too far for the basic things. Rain most of the week but that’s Wales and to not far to the coastline. Warm and plenty to watch on the TV if it rains too hard. Will be happy to stay again when next over

  • "The cottage was very clean and well stocked plus the Welcome Package was a lovely touch."

It is a great base for seeing North Wales. There were only two people plus a small dog and I would say it would be a little small for a family plus a large dog?

  • "We would like to say that the cottage was spotless and very homely."

The little bits like leaving some basic groceries when we arrived was lovely. Everything worked as it should and all in all made for an amazing week again in a beautiful location. Nice visit from Ken to make sure everything was fine which it was.

  • "It was a good place in a quiet neighbourhood."

No shops, restaurants or takeaways nearby. The cottage was clean and fruits, biscuits and milk were nice touch. However I would have preferred more than one toilet role for 3 people for 7 nights

  • "The cottage is very small for 4 adults."

The whole house suffers from condensation and damp , we left windows open daily to keep it aired. The toilet fills far too slowly and needs to be adjusted. The decor is a bit dated.

Thanks for your feedback, the property has been checked since your visit and there has been no condensation or damp noted. The toilet is also within acceptable limits for the water pressure in the area. Our contact details are given to customers pre arrival and Sykes also have a dedicated helpline for customers at properties with any concerns. There has never been any issue with damp and if we had been contacted at the time, we would have been happy to reassure you that there was no damp, I'm sorry that you didn't give us the opportunity to do so. The property is freshly painted and we pride ourselves on keeping the property spotlessly clean which is reflected in the excellent comments we receive continuously and thank you for your high cleanliness score, much appreciated. A very pretty cottage, spotless clean, all the necessary was there from the kitchen ustensils to detergents, cosmetics in the bathroom, coffee, tea, sugar, salt , paper, oil etc. Very cosy, nicely furnished, the area quiet and pitoresc. Many things to do around for everyone and all the pockets.☺️.

  • "We really enjoyed our stay at Holland Terrace."

It was in a prime location for walking, breathing in fresh air and exploring disused mines. The house is cosy, and the kitchen is well equipped for cooking. Everything was clean and tidy, and it was very quiet. The owners kindly provided some beverages, milk, fruit and some basics for the day we arrived, which was a nice touch. We did not find a corner shop locally, but there are superstores a short drive away in Port Madog. There is a small park opposite and a cafe close-by, which provided a good breakfast. There was a lot to do locally, and both my sons enjoyed a day in the disused mines with "Go Below" which we booked well in advance. We visited Portmeirion, which is lovely but costs £12 to get in. Locally there is Bounce Below indoor trampolining for kids, a zip line for adults and a steam train line that offers great views of the mountains. We definitely recommend this house in such an interesting area.

  • "Cottage was nicely presented, clean and tidy and is in a good position to explore North Wales."

However we found the downstairs space small for 3 adults and a teenager, although it is a three bedroom cottage. Would be ideal for 2 -3 people. No wardrobe in main bedroom. The description said the kitchen table could be open for four however it would be very squashed with one person having to sit in the corridor which leads to the bathroom and another would be sitting with a step behind them. Kitchen was adequately sourced, no drainer or chopping boards. Not a problem if you want to eat out. Had to keep switching on the hot water booster to get any, particularly in the morning and evening. Only outdoor space is at the front of the property but there is a lovely park near by. Unfortunately we had builders in next door from 8am on two of the days. Can highly recommend Zip World which is only 5 minutes away but the steam railway is very expensive.

The steam train to Porthmadog runs just behind the cottage. It is a great base for exploring North Wales. The owner left provisions which was a nice touch. If you could guarantee the sunshine that would have made it better

  • "It was wonderful to stay in a typical terrace house where the slate workers lived in former times."

The house seems to be newly renovated with all modern facilities and comfort. Very cosy for two persons or a small family of four - living room, kitchen and bath on the ground floor, three bed rooms on the top floor. Ideal location to climb the Moelwynion and to explore the old slate ruins in Cwm Orthin and Cwm Croesor above Tanygrisiau. Behind the back yard of the house, the Ffestiniog Railway steams in sighting distance. The small village street in front of the house has regular bus service to Blaenau. The hots cared for many details and even placed some fresh fruits, coffee and tee in the modern kitchen and even wood for the fireplace. When I remember our stay at Holland Terrace, I would like to come back immediately. The only small bit of a pity may be that the steps at the back-side of the house cannot be used to access a small sitting area in the back-yard. So, the only outside sitting area is at the front (street) side of the house. But anyway: There was surely nothing we didn't like.

There was no stress around key collection because of the key-safe. All necessary info was passed on by hosts by e-mail before we arrived. The place is clean, comfortable and done up in good taste and is very central to many attractions. We were supplied with many essentials which made the stay so much easier. We stayed here for two nights and felt at home.

About the location

TANYGRISIAU

Blaenau Ffestiniog 1.1 miles; Porthmadog 8 miles; Betws-y-Coed 15 miles; Beddgelert 16 miles.

Tanygrisiau, meaning "below the steps", refers to the stepped cliffs above this traditional Welsh village. The Moelwyn mountains protect the village from much of the northerly gales in the winter, and give it a pleasant southerly aspect with relatively mild weather considering its location high in Snowdon. The village stands amongst dramatic scenery, and Tanygrisiau is a good starting point for many walks, especially if your intention is to climb Moelwyn itself. Tanygrisiau was famous for its slate mining, producing a high quality black slate that was used across the world. Tanygrisiau railway station is on the famous Ffestiniog Railway, a narrow gauge railway built to carry slate from the mines down to the sea at Porthmadog; today it is a renowned tourist attraction providing stunning views on its trip to the coast. Only 1.1 miles away is Blaenau Ffestiniog, once the capital of slate quarrying and in the 18th century known as the "City of Slate". The town stands in an elevated, natural bowl amidst this mountainous region and has a good variety of shops and pubs, but is best known for its tourist attractions. One of the old quarries is now the renowned Llechwedd Slate Cavern. The famous narrow gauge Ffestiniog Railway provides wonderful trips through spectacular countryside. Enjoy superb walks and bike trails at Coed-y-Brenin, one of the best mountain bike centres in Britain, as well as good climbing at the Plas y Brenin National Mountain Centre, wonderful sandy beaches, or great fishing or golf. Visit delightful Betws-y-Coed, the Italianate Village at Portmeirion, or Bala, with its renowned white water rafting opportunities.
