  • "Lovely place to stay for a week's hiking around the Lakes."

Friendly owners and comfortable cottage - has just about everything you need and more. We were able to put our bikes in their barn and there was a really handy freezer and drying room in another barn opposite which meant wet and smelly coats/footwear didn't have to go in the cottage! There are some great walks from the doorstep - although be warned that "the Screes" walk isn't at all easy. A short drive (10 mins or so) to National Trust car park at Wasdale puts you at the start of a host of classic mountain hikes including Scafell Pike and many others. Also a short drive (5 mins) takes you to some great areas for swimming and paddleboarding - but leave early to make sure you can park. Our first time this side of the Scafell massif but we'd definitely come back.

Thank you for your very informative feedback and positive comments. We are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay here and that you would like to return. Property Owner

  • "Excellent in every respect."

The level of provision and personal concern for our enjoyment of our stay could not have been better and were very much appreciated. The warmth and good humour of our welcome, the very generous welcome pack, the decor , furnishing and lighting of the accommodation, the floral displays in the patio area, provision of a variety of walks guides, suggested additional routes that we would have missed otherwise, the generous supply of wood for the wood fire, had we decided to light it. One feature of the accommodation we have not come across is one Sykes would do well to recommend to all its property owners, viz. low level green safety lighting on staircases, which came on automatically at night.

Thank you so much for your generous and informative feedback. It was lovely to chat with you both and to find out your personal connections to the area - especially that of your grandfather! Keep enjoying the walking and exploring! Property Owner

A great welcome pack on arrival. Kitchen was well provided with pots pans and utensils etc. Cottage was spotlessly clean. The large shower with loads of hot water was terrific after walking in the hot weather. Lots of low level walks from the doorstep for those who can't manage climbing the fells. The farm setting was tremendous. David even put my mind at ease about walking through his cattle. Yes they were no bother. We would love to visit again.11 out 10.

The owners, Sally-Ann and David are friendly and very helpful. We were made to feel very welcome. There was also a fine and very generous welcome pack. The cottage is in the farm yard and there are chickens wandering freely. You can also watch a wide variety of birds visiting the many feeders. It's a great base for walking in Wasdale with several good walks accessable straight from the door. There's a great tea room and farm shop (The Sawmill - great for lunches and coffee and cakes) and a fine pub (The Strands Inn - wide range of beers and good, substantial meals); both are about a 15 minute walk away. The cottage had everything we needed, including some delicious eggs from the farm itself. We loved being surrounded by lambs, chickens and cows, and the farm attracted plenty of birdlife too. The location was excellent - close to Wastwater but very quiet. Our hosts were very friendly and close by if we needed anything. We went on some excellent walks and my husband managed to scale both peaks at the top of the Screes while I read books in the sunshine by the lake and outside our cottage. It was a beautiful, peaceful break that wasn't spoiled by the two days of rain that we had - you have to expect some ups and downs in the weather when you're in the Lakes! The Screes pub in Nether Wasdale, a mile away, offered some excellent ale and food, albeit outside due to COVID rules. We also had some lovely ice cream from the Sawmill cafe, which is also a farm shop. There wasn't much else open/to do in the immediate vicinity other than walking, due to a combination of the remote location and COVID, but we didn't care - it was exactly what we needed after spending the pandemic stuck at home. We'll definitely return to Wastwater and this cottage in the near future, if only so my husband can knock a few more of the big fells by Wastwater off his list!

The farmers showed us their animals and even let us feed one of the baby lambs which our three-year old daughter was delighted by. The pizza place in Gosforth The Wild Olive was especially tasty and even did takeways which were very popular! There was a lovely playground there. We found many child-friendly places within an hour's drive such as Muncaster castle with stunning views (the meadow vole maze went down especially well), the Derwent Pencil Museum in Keswick, the Maryport Aquarium and the Lake District Wildlife park. • "The accommodation was well located for walks in and around Wasdale."

The cottage was warm, very comfortable and well equipped. The hosts very friendly and welcoming. It is on a working farm which comes with added interests. At the time of our stay a cow calved and many lambs were born. Would thoroughly recommend a stay here. Marianne and Terry

About the location

NETHER WASDALE

Gosforth 3.9 miles; Santon Bridge 2.3 miles

Nether Wasdale is a small village situated to the west of Wastwater, the deepest lake in Great Britain. The village is well-served with two pubs, one with its own brewery, a farm shop and café selling local produce and ice cream. This area is the birthplace of climbing and is a superb base for climbing, hiking and all outdoor pursuits. Unlike many lakes, motorised boats are forbidden on Wastwater though canoeing and kayaking are perfect for these unspoilt and tranquil waters which add to the peace and serenity of this stunning part of the Lake District National Park. Wastwater is sided by The Screes and at the head of the lake the fells of Great Gable and Scafell Pike can be reached, popular with hikers and climbers alike. The view from the summit of Great Gable is said to be the finest view in Britain. At Wasdale Head is the church of St. Olaf, one of the smallest churches in England, dating back to 1550 and its beams are said to have come from Viking long boats. Close by are the villages of Santon Bridge and Gosforth.
