We loved the fire it made the whole place feel cosy. The wet room was ideal for days out in the countryside exploring. The patio area around the retreat meant we could open the doors from different sides and still look out over the stunning countryside. It was relaxing and calm the perfect place to retreat and spent some time together.

Spotlessly clean, beautifully designed with lots of natural light and the open plan design in the living area is ideal. Perfect, peaceful location where you feel instantly relaxed and at home. The outside area is extremely secure for dogs which is important for us. The owners, Dawna and Steve, are genuinely lovely and nothing is too much trouble. We were very sad to leave at the end of our stay. I'm fact, leaving the cottage to go out for a wander was a struggle because we were so cosy! Thanks for a wonderful stay. X

  • "We always go with Sykes, as we have found their homes to always be of a high calibre."

Unfortunately this property was disappointing. We always look carefully at the internal photos of the houses on Sykes; as it gives us a flavour of the quality of home. However, the photos on the Sykes site are not current and are therefore misleading. The house was very cluttered with lots of random, (what I considered) unnecessary extra furniture, including a large fridge/freezer in the living room area! I would not of chosen the house if the pictures had been current, this needs rectifying immediately, to prevent any further disappointed customers. The Retreat also needs some TLC: a through clean to remove the cobwebs in the bathroom, an extraction fan in the bathroom that works, replacement of rusted soap/cream dispenser, re-sealed/varnished wood underneath bathroom sink, the tumble dryer to be fixed, the wooden floors to be polished/varnished, plates that don't 'arc' the microwave when you want to heat things up (due to decoration on rims), etc. We also found that the heating system was locked, so we were reliant upon the owners to ensure the house was warm enough. We don't go on holiday to have to hassle with what should be basic amenities in a home. On the plus side the Retreat still has potential: the lovely fitted kitchen, the bathroom tiling/spaciousness and the wooden internal doors (which were as shown on the Sykes listing photos). The location of the Retreat was also great, from the point of view of being away from the hussle and bustle of the villages, but very close to areas of interest such as Stratford Upon Avon and Warwick. However, I do not feel the property is currently anywhere near it's 4.9 'outstanding' rating (I have stayed in lots of Sykes 4-5* holiday accommodation), which will continue to lead to customers being disappointed and unhappy.

  • "Property not as advertised."

Lots of mould in bathroom shower and rusty soap dispenser. NO welcome package, not even 1/2 cup of milk! There were 7 teabags, some instant coffee and some sugar, that was it. Tired, torn couch in living room. No windows to open in bedroom for fresh air. Dryer not working and promised fix never happened. Signage for property extremely difficult to read in the dark and rain. Property is a considerable distance from the village, not “in” the village, it would be a 30 minute walk minimum to the actual village. Pictures online do not reflect the actual furniture, decor or grounds and the owners blamed Sykes for this. Huge additional fridge stored in the dining area, making it extremely cramped. Luggage racks would be nice. We had to buy a scrubber for dishes, and a soap dish. No shelves in shower for shampoo or soap. We had to ask for a teapot. Drawers in bedroom dresser were difficult to open. Overall a disappointing experience. Positives: Bed was comfortable. Linens were clean. Location was quiet. Owner was very pleasant and friendly. Large TV worked well.

Hello Lesley. Thank you for your feedback and giving me the chance to address your issues. When I meet you when you arrived, you and your husband made it quite clear that you did not like the location of The Retreat, your husband even apologised to me for your behaviour.I put this down to you travelling a long way and feeling tierd. It does state on the Sykes website, that its a mile from the centre of the village. The milk was in the small fridge to go with the tea and coffee.I have found no mould in the bathroom,/wetroom there is a velux window and fan that allow moisture to leave the bathroom. We also have velux windows that open in EVERY room, alongside patio doors that open. Most people appreciate the large fridge for storing drinks and food, which is why it was requested by clients previously. My husband did come up and see you and asked if everything was ok,you said you were very happy. We did offer to do any drying that needed doing, your husband knocked my door 2 evenings at 9.30 pm at night asking about drying your washing. It would have been very appreciated and courteous if he had mentioned your issues and they would have been immediately addressed. Truly a “retreat”, as in the name. The courtyard encircling the retreat cottage is completely secured by a medium height fence. I could actually let my do off-leash in the small courtyard. It was truly dog friendly and treats had been provided for our dog. However, the photograph and description of the cottage were somewhat misleading, as it does not have an enclosed lawned garden. That is the owner's garden. The Retreat is surrounded by a paved path and to the side adjacent to the sheep field are raised flower beds and a picnic table. What a fantastic week we've had at the Retreat. It is a beautifully presented cottage, with all mod cons and some really nice comforting touches like the log burner, which would be perfect for those cold winter evenings. The cottage is surrounded by amazing countryside, with wildlife literally on your doorstep. Our family dog, Cora, took a very welcoming shine to a resident sheep in the field next to the cottage. We have it in good faith from a previous guest, it is called 'baa baa blackberry' :) We had young pheasants visit us every night and it was really wonderful. On arrival we were very warmly greeted by Steve, who also offered to help us with our baggage. He gave us a brief history of the cottage and of his adjoining home, which I must say is rather beautiful (I'm jealous). Upon showing us around the cottage, there was a welcome pack of goodies for us to get us started. This was such a lovely touch indeed, and really started things off on the right foot. Steve and Dawna are the perfect hosts, left us to it and we always had a friendly hello from them every morning. The cottage is very welcoming and has all the facilities that you need. Has a small patio area which surroundings it, which is nice to sit out in on the morning as the sun rises and great for dogs too. Both bedrooms have french doors which you can open up and have a cup of tea in a bed as the birds sing. The walk in shower is lovely! As are the cosy sofa's. Overall, it is Immaculately presented throughout, we could not have been happier. The location, for us, what just about perfect! It could not have been any better. 10-15 minutes either way and you are in Warwick, Leamington Spa and Stratford-Upon-Avon. And the Cotswolds are no further than 30 minutes drive away, and I recommend you visit as much of that as you can. Literally everything is on your doorstop. The village itself is very quaint and peaceful, and the local pubs full of charm and serving some delicious food. We had some recommendations of places to visit from Steve, and also previous guests in the guestbook have written many places to visit and where to eat. You really are spoilt for choice, trust me. Even our dog had a fantasic time exploring all the local parks, and we had some lovely walks out at Kingsbury Waterpark also. Our holiday was perfect, and we loved the Retreat, so much so that we are looking at booking again!!

We cant really say much about our holiday as we had to leave due to a bereavement. It is a very warm cottage and we had to turn the heating right down as there are only patio doors in the bedrooms no windows, we couldnt stand the heat nor could the dog lol but that isnt any fault of the property owners. The best equipped kitchen i have ever had on holiday, i even took things with me to cook xmas dinner with but neednt had bothered, only thing i would say there was no cupboard space to put food that didn't go in the fridge as it was all taken up with pots and pans etc. I did think there was more space than there was outside for the dog, but we managed. Other thing is the long walk from the car past the owners house to the cottage is a pain carrying all you luggage and supplies, would be better if you could park closer and the tiled path can be a bit slippy if wet.

Relaxing walks are feasible directly from the cottage, particularly around the conservation villages of Barford, Charlecote and Hampden Lucy, each with their own medieval churches and characterful pubs. The owners, Steve and Dawn, make sure you want for nothing and, if ever you need help or require anything else, they come round in an instant. You couldn't find nicer people to ensure you have the best holiday possible! In the course of the week we used the cottage as a base to visit some wonderful places: so many pretty honey-coloured Cotswold villages, incl. Chipping Campden, Bibury and Burford. Other hits with us were Warwick & its Tudor architecture, Broadway Tower, offering glorious views in all directions, a guided tour of the famous Rugby School & associations with Tom Brown's Schooldays, Leamington Spa and its Regency parades and parks, the Iron Age White Horse of Uffington and so much else, incl. Kenilworth Castle & many National Trust manor houses and gardens. Our favourites were Kelmscote Manor and Baddesley Clinton. Recommended: - a well stocked local village store in Barford and massive Tesco on the road from Warwick to L'Spa. - great pubs at the Boar's Head, Hampden Lucy and King's Head, Wellesbourne. - idyllic places to enjoy a coffee are numerous, but among our favourites were Charlescote Orangerie and the Art Gallery & Museum in Leamington Spa. The Retreat deserves a high rating and we'd love to return sometime soon!!

  • "The Retreat at Barford was outstanding."

It's so close to Warwick and other areas of interest and has a real quality about it. the cottage is situated next to the owners house up a path to the side of their house, however, once inside it felt very peaceful and on it's own. The owners were very welcoming but also left us to our privacy and left some lovely goodies, cake, tea, milk and cheese etc in the fridge which was a lovely touch. The rooms are all amazing, all spacious, gorgeous bathroom and bedrooms and the bedrooms overlooking the field with patio doors is lovely - Also the seating areas outside are really nice. The only tiny issue is the website says the local pub is an 8 min walk., it's not! its at least 15 minutes, maybe more. Wasn't a huge issue but we do like to have a pub within a short distance as we are out all day walking so it's nice to have a "local" we would thoroughly recommend this lovely place to friends and family and hope to return ourselves for a weekend.

  • "We have enjoyed a lovely stay at this cottage ."

The property had everything we needed. The quality of the building and furnishings was very high, We especially liked the wet room and woodstove in the cottage as we had our elderly parents with us. On arrival we found the fridge had been fully stocked and tea/coffee/sugar plus bisciuts had been provided including chocolates and flowers in a vase. The owners lived next to the cottage and are new to holiday renting - they couldn't do more for us even when we had a special favour to ask regarding my sister visiting. We would highly recommend this holiday cottage and we hope to visit again at some point. We wish Dawna and Steve ( the owners) the very best in the future .
