However it was very isolated and both dogs and people were infected with ticks

Thank you very much for your feedback, we’re really pleased to know you found Bagtor Mill to be well equipped and in good order and we do hope that you had a happy holiday. We agree that it’s in an idyllic setting which is why we’re careful to include in the description the surroundings and a map – this is of course a big reason why many visitors choose to stay here. Ticks are common across all of Dartmoor (especially in areas where deer and sheep live) and are most likely encountered in spring or autumn. There is useful advice for pet owners on how to prevent (and remove) on the official Dartmoor visitors website. Property Owner

It is well equipped with everything you could want for a week (or more!) away. There is plenty of space and the grounds are amazing - much loved by our grandchildren, our dog (lovely walks) and of course us! It was a lovely getaway in a rural location but within reach of amenities and places to visit. It definitely ticked all the boxes for 6 adults and 3 grandchildren (all under 4). After a day out they couldn’t wait to return and play in the grounds. Would definitely love to return.

Enjoyed the terrace; breakfasts and dining outside; or sitting listening to birdsong and watching dragonflies. The gardens are beautiful and well kept. We enjoyed all the ponds and pathways. The rooms were large and comfy and the whole house felt welcoming. The grounds with gardens and mill ponds are just gorgeous and even in early Spring we could appreciate the different plants and trees coming to life. The cottage itself was very well equipped and cooking on the Aga soon became the norm, although a good pair of oven gloves are required! Ideally placed for walks on the moor and the coast is easily within reach by car, but be prepared for muddy narrow lanes. Overall a really fantastic place to stay even with the typical mix of UK weather thrown at us.

  • "Bagtor Mill exceeded our expectations."

The house and grounds are simply stunning. Everything was in good, clean condition and the kitchen was well stocked. The Welcome pack was a thoughtful touch. Our daughter was converted to bird twitching because of the hive of activity around the bird feeding station. Our son managed to spot several deer. Our grandchildren loved the ducks, the ponds and the river. Our son-in-law fortunately knew the rudiments of Aga cooking. My husband enjoyed stoking the fire each evening. Ilsington village shop and the Carpenter’s Arms were a few minutes drive away and everyone was very friendly and helpful. Haytor was the nearest tor and car park with an excellent tourist information shop. The Rock Inn reserved a snug room for us for a superb Sunday lunch. Ullacombe Farm proved a hit with the littluns as they had toy tractors to ride, some farm animals and best of all, according to our grandson, you could buy a bottle and fill it with ‘pink’ or chocolate milk! A slight quibble with Sykes policy regarding arrival and departure times. Pre-pandemic used to be 4pm and 10am. Now 5pm and 9am which is unreasonable. Fortunately, Mark let us know that the place was ready at 4pm instead of 5pm. But trying to get the littluns fed and dressed while trying to get everything out of the house by 9am was stressful to say the least. We loved our stay at Bagtor Mill and are already planning our next trip here!

We were all very impressed with the quality of the accommodation. The house was beautiful, atmospheric, clean, warm and comfortable. We really enjoyed the challenge of cooking the Christmas dinner using the Aga! The huge garden and grounds were a joy to explore - particularly the extensive woods running along the side of the stream - and the fabulous bird feeding station which attracted hundreds of birds including sparrowhawk and water rail! The location suited us perfectly, with Haytor rocks and the River Dart both a short distance away. Mark was a fantastic host - helpful, cheerful and welcoming. He kept us supplied with seemingly limitless quantities of good dry wood for the open fire. We particularly appreciated the Christmas hamper - containing a bottle of port, local cheeses and a fabulous fruit cake. We also loved the fully decorated Christmas tree!

The property is very comfortable and the garden is beautiful with so many flowers, wild birds and different areas to sit in and enjoy. The woods are great for the dogs, but be aware of deer. The best thing was the peace and quiet. You feel as though you are in a different world just with nature. Also it was refreshing not to have signs everywhere saying don't do this or that but just being able to enjoy everything. The house itself is not very sound proof. Every noise from the TV or conversation in the downstairs lounge can be heard upstairs very clearly in the main bedroom, so no early nights. This was a minor thing and we were more aware as there was a young baby in our party, so when up early we all were! The lanes are very narrow so this is not the cottage for you if you are a nervous rural driver. If you are looking for dog walks try the National Trust property 4-5 miles away, Parke which allows dogs off lead on it's trails. Thanks to Mark for sharing this amazing property. Everyone loved it .

Waking up to the sound of the stream and the bird song was heavenly. Great food and staff at the local Ilsington hotel for the odd night you don’t want to cook and the Ilsington village shop was brilliant for supplies (nice wander up the quiet lanes to it) along with the butchers at Ullacombe Farm Shop. We didn’t make it to the pub in Ilsington (one for next time) but the Rugglestone Inn at Widecombe in the Moor was great. Just to try and organise when we can go back now!

We were impressed by the comfort and cleanliness at the cottage and as a larger group we felt the space allowed us to spend time together as a group whilst allowing us the opportunity to find quiet spaces in which to relax when we wished. Mark was a wonderful host and made us feel so welcome, giving us information on local eateries and providing us with extra logs when we ran out, (the wintry weather in January meant we spent a few evenings indoors!). The bedrooms were so well arranged, all of us feeling we had plenty of space and ample storage. Popular games were available when we were unable to head out for walks and the fire and cosy lounge provided a welcome and relaxing respite from the inclement weather. The kitchen was well appointed and cooking on the Aga a real treat. What was brilliant for us was how at home our two dogs felt at Bagtor Mill, the outside space and pet-friendly kitchen made our stay with them so easy.....like us they were sad to leave! • "Our week at Bagtor Mill was absolutely wonderful."

We arrived to find this picture perfect little enclave of two thatched properties lying in a dip beside the River Lemon in a tree dappled valley. The mill wheel is still in place and there is a little stream that runs down the side of the property which feeds the two ponds. Very dreamy! Made all the more dreamy by an unusually perfect week on Dartmoor of wall to wall sunshine. The weather had been dry for a while which meant that the two beautiful ponds on the property were very low. Very appealing to the dogs, that both dived in to the mud on arrival after a long car journey! (there is a very useful hose on the side of the Workshop!) The house is south east facing and breakfast every morning on the terrace in front of the house, in the sunshine, was a highlight. The terrace is bathed in sunshine (when we have it!) all day and is a quiet spot to while away the hours if not climbing the tors. Unfortunately the sun goes behind the hill in the evening so a jumper was necessary for supper. The house sits in a woodland setting with the grounds meandering down the valley. The drive sweeps round infront of the house, but there is a secluded little grassy area down by the summer house, a little walk down the track, where you can sit in the sun, serenaded by bird song and cooled by the breeze up the valley. The track leads on through the woods for a lovely short walk with the dogs in the evening. This is a place of real tranquility. We were 8 adults (3 couples and two cousins!) so the sleeping arrangements worked out perfectly. There are 2 double rooms, 1 twin and 1 double with an additional single bed. All bedding was good quality with lovely comfortable mattresses and good quality fluffy bath and face towels for everyone (if this is important to you) The kitchen was well equiped and there is an electric AGA with a surface mounted electric hob beside. Loads of cutlery and crockery so no endless washing up sessions in order to have a clean mug! The basics were provided - selection of individual teas/coffee; cooking oil; biscuits; milk; washing up liquid; loo paper; soap and individual shower gels/shampoos etc in the bathrooms. If I said that the only thing lacking was a knife sharpener, you will understand that Mark has pretty much thought of everything! The sitting room is a great size for a large party and there are a good selection of books - Dartmoor/flowers/novels - and some games. A useful community shop is only a few minutes up the hill in Ilsington (open Sunday mornings too) selling lovely fresh produce as well as essentials. Perhaps my only disappointment was that there are no footpaths from the property on to the moors, so we had to use the cars every day. But the house is in easy access of some wonderful areas of the moors for walking, with some of the "big names" (Haytor/Widecombe/Dartmeet) all relative close by. The north part of the moors (Okehampton/Belstone) is probably a good 40-60mins through the magical Dartmoor lanes. Mark is a wonderful host, friendly and at the end of the phone if needed. Bagtor Mill is a very special location for a real escape. Thank you Mark for sharing it everyone.

  • "A wonderful week in a fabulous historic home."

Beautifully clean and very very comfortable accommodation. Lovely beds, linen, towels, and pillows; all of a very high standard. The bedrooms were pretty and very peaceful. Firewood was also provided. There were complementary biscuits and milk on our arrival. We really enjoyed the exquisite setting of Bagtor Mill with endless gardens and a woodland walk within the grounds. It was a pleasure to stay there and to meet Mark the owner, who was available if needed. The stream and river Lemon were a delight and then a short eight to ten minute drive to the moor. The outdoor table and chairs were also very comfortable with a beautiful view of the garden. Peace and tranquility always present. There is also a fantastic village shop in Ilsington which is open until 19.30. Produce there is plentiful and of a high quality with lovely volunteers running the shop. Thank you to Mark, the owner for providing this fabulous holiday home.

The property

This amazing thatched detached house is situated beside the River Lemon about a mile from the pretty Devon village of Ilsington.

Adapted and extended from a 17th century mill house, it is Grade II listed and is a very special place for families or groups of friends to relax in this tranquil setting.

The long drive leads you up to the entrance into a kitchen fitted in oak with a traditional electric Aga.

Enjoy leisurely meals together in the dining room, or snuggle down in the charming sitting room with its beams, open fire and door opening to a terrace.

The bedrooms ramble over two floors, with two doubles and a single (with truckle under) on the first floor and, up another flight of steep stairs, a roomy family bedroom under the eaves, complete with TV.

The surroundings are gorgeous, with the fascinating original mill wheel and workings to admire and five acres of gardens to wander, with the river babbling through and ponds with wildlife amongst the lawns.

A terrace is a lovely suntrap with outdoor furniture.

You may spot deer and other gentle creatures amongst the private woodland paths which are signed from the house.

Beyond this lovely place is more beautiful countryside, Dartmoor's southeastern slopes and the River Lemon valley which is a Site of Special Scientific Interest where birds and butterflies thrive.

A visit to the dramatic landmark of Haytor is a must, as is the traditional seaside town of Teignmouth.

With easy access to the A38 within a couple of miles, Bagtor Mill is perfectly placed for exploring the area.

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £100.
