Loved staying on a working farm waking up to see donkeys, chickens and Highland cows roaming freely. Paul and Sam both very friendly owners and happy to chat about their experiences. Has all the amenities you could ask for from a one bedroom cottage, including the super sized hot tub offering amazing views to the river and dark skies stars. I can't recommend enough the local walks which have directions supplied in leaflets in the cottage. I'd planned a few drives out to Dales peaks and other walks but in the end there really was no need. Definitely also should check out Farfield Mill just a few 100m walk away with lots of great art and knick knacks and really tasty food at the cafe. Great way to celebrate my 50th.

Relaxing hot tub with scenic views. The owners are friendly, helpful and generous. They gave us delicious eggs from their hens. Well equipped and clean. Comfortable bed. Great for a relaxing weekend break. The owners have lovely friendly dogs, who are taken into the field below the cottage to exercise. They are the happiest most loved dogs you could ever meet. The cottage is great if you want a walking holiday. Sedbergh itself is a lovely town, within walking distance. Recommend Al Forno restaurant, if you like Italian food. Only warning about the area I would give is the taxis are very expensive. You could walk into town. We did not walk because it was a dark, damp November evening and we did not use the car because we shared a bottle of wine in the restaurant. If you do not want to walk into town, cook for yourself, or go in the summer when the evenings are light. The kitchen has good utensils. The cottage itself was perfect. This is our second stay and we would definately go back. Looking at next spring.

Sedbergh and Fairfield Mill were very local for eating out and shopping. The hottub was a treat after a day spent in the outdoors, especially with its views over donkeys, chickens, riverbanks, fells and the setting sun in the distance. We slept soundly in the extremely comfy bed and there was ample hot water for showers. When booking I was a little concerned about the 'A' road close by, but in fact it is just a country lane with little traffic. Paul and Sam are kind and generous hosts.

The barn sits at the back of the owners farm house who are the perfect hosts friendly, knowledgeable and helpful, with their own four very friendly dogs, three highland cows, three donkeys and numerous chickens. From the patio / hot tub you have at stunning view over the farms field to the river and up the valley towards the fells. A short stroll over the field and you reach the river bank which at the time of writing was shallow. The footpath which runs across the farm parallel to the river gives access in each direction so you never even have to touch your car keys. You can turn right and a 25 minute flat river side walk you are into the village of Sedbergh which is a small town with a few nice pubs, Spar local and other amenities. Turn left and you can explore many miles of fell walking. We chose Speight Cottage because of the quiet location and the freedom it would give us with our dog Erik and we were not disappointed. As well as the enclosed gated garden, at the time of writing we had the use of two enclosed fields to exercise him although after a day walking along with all extra stimulation of sights and smells he was shattered. The owners Sam & Paul welcomed Erik as one of the family alway making a fuss of him. Happy dog, Happy Family, the best holiday .......

  • "The scenery that surrounds the cottage is stunning."

The patio of the cottage allows you to stare and enjoy the hillside. The owners are very accommodating and help with any problems. They go the extra mile to make the accommodation as welcome as possible by providing a few essentials and a scone which is a lovely welcome treat. They have 4 dogs who are friendly and love to be played with! We would definitely recommend them in the future! Thank you for a lovely weekend break! We almost missed the cottage entrance when we first drove past as we didn't realise how close it was on the main road.

  • "The cottage is perfectly located on a working farm on the outskirts of Sedbergh village."

The owners were so friendly and the cream tea on arrival was perfect. The cottage is isolated only enough to enjoy the tranquil countryside but close enough to the village to enjoy a 15minute walk along the river to access shops, pubs and cafes. The howgills are fun to explore and the views incredible. The hot tub was very welcoming for tired bodies at the end of a day trecking around The Lakes and Yorkshire Dales. We cannot recommend this cottage enough!!

Everything about the cottage was perfect and Sam and Paul made us feel so welcome. A cream tea was waiting for us when we arrived as well as fresh bread, bacon and eggs. Our dog Archie was free to go anywhere and spent lots of time playing with Sam and Paul’s dogs who were regular visitors to the cottage. We will definitely be returning and also recommending it to friends and family.

The cottage surpassed all expectations, with a cosy quiet slice of heaven located just off the m6. Hot tub and woodburner were on our list of must haves. The patio of the cottage sat just above the river Rawthey, looking out onto green fields. We enjoyed a few evenings in the hot tub under the stars! Weather was very kind whilst we were there. Everything we needed was provided with lots of added extras, dressing gowns, fresh bread, milk, eggs and proper bacon! Having never used sykes before, we definitely would again! • "When we booked Speight Cottage, we were simply hoping for a comfortable, quiet escape, surrounded by beautiful countryside."

What we found when got to Scrogg House Farm exceeded all our expectations. The cottage was immaculate and clearly considerable care has gone into creating this first class accommodation. The kitchen was very well equipped with every utensil we could need for our long weekend provided. The living/dining room was an ideal size for two visitors and their dog, with log burner, new sofa, good tv and wifi. The bedroom had ample storage for clothes, with a hairdryer, mirrors and very comfortable large bed. Like the other rooms, the bathroom was decorated nicely. It was spacious, with a large powerful shower and towels/dressing gowns provided. Underfloor heating throughout ensured we were never cold despite some very inclement autumnal weather. On our arrival, we found scones with jam and cream waiting for us, with milk and bacon in the fridge and a fresh loaf and eggs generously supplied by Sam and Paul. The attention to detail and determination to impress their guests was not lost on us. The hot tub on the large south facing patio is the perfect vantage point to enjoy the incredible view over the fields, river and hills beyond. Having never experienced an outdoor hot tub before and it being October, we really didn’t expect to spend much time in it. How wrong we were! Other than sliding the cover off, slipping in and relaxing, there’s nothing more to do. Again, no expense has been spared as this was clearly a very good quality large hot tub, with bluetooth connection for your own music to play through its inbuilt speakers and an array of coloured lights. The temperature was perfect and we literally spent hours in it! Feeding Sam’s Highland cattle and donkeys and meeting the three dogs, hens and cockerel added to our enjoyment and we loved walking along the riverbank into Sedbergh. Undoubtedly, we’ll recommend Speight Cottage to our friends and family and we’re already looking forward to our next visit.

About the location

SEDBERGH

Kendal 11.5 miles; Kirkby Lonsdale 11.8 miles, Hawes 15.8 miles.

The attractive old market town of Sedbergh (pronounced Sed-Ber), with its old-world atmosphere, is not only set in the magnificent western dales of the Yorkshire Dales National Park but is also close to the rugged eastern fells of the Lake District. The town, with its narrow streets, little shops, traditional pubs, famous school dating back to 1525 and its 12th century church, has been a thriving community for hundreds of years, with a market dating from the 13th Century. Leading from Sedbergh is Dentdale, the jewel of the Yorkshire Dales with its rolling hills and dry-stone walls, stretching 14 miles from the windswept moors below Whernside to the confluence of the Rivers Dee and Rawthey. At the centre of the dale is Dent, with its cobbled streets, which has existed since Norman times and nearby Dent railway station is on the renowned Settle-Carlisle railway line. There are three golf courses nearby, as well as tennis, riding, and fishing, and the area is a paradise for walkers, ramblers, runners, and cyclists. This, together with the tranquillity of the surrounding valleys, the two National Parks and it being England's book town, makes an ideal year-round holiday destination.
