  • "Taigh Chailean is a beautiful home, exquisitely furnished and styled, very warm and cosy, and super-comfortable."

The panoramic view from the picture windows in the living-room is quite breathtaking, and with patio doors leading directly out to this view from both bedrooms, the view can be enjoyed both inside and outside. The house is fully equipped with everything you might need, including two folders full of useful information. Marion is a lovely host, welcoming, and very helpful. The house is ideally situated for accessing all of Lewis, and close enough to the border for easy journeying into Harris. Additionally, being on all one level, with its “wet-room type” shower, wide doorways and uncluttered interior, it is ideally placed to accommodate people who, like me, have mobility issues – and indeed the car can be parked right at the door if desired, ensuring a seamless and easy transfer from car to house. All in all Taigh Chailean is a truly exceptional holiday home, one which is sure to please all who come to stay.

  • "We (family of four) had a great stay in this lovely, clean and extremely comfortable cottage."

I would give it seven stars! The house is very well-equipped with good quality furnishings, kitchen and cooking equipment. The location is stunning and very convenient to explore both Lewis and Harris. Marion (the owner) is simply a super-host; very welcoming, knowledgeable and helpful. The fresh eggs, bread and marmalade she left for us as a welcome gift were delicious and highly appreciated. The cottage was absolutely spotless and it was very clear that it is treated as a home - not as a rental - by the owners. I couldn’t recommend this place more highly! Thank you, Marion - we had a truly amazing time!

  • "Very comfortable accommodation."

The bedrooms are very spacious. We only used the double, but the bed was exceptionally comfy. There is a good TV in each room so perfect for snuggling up in bed to watch after dark. Each room has its own ensuite which would suit 4 people staying. A well equipped kitchen was useful. The sitting room has magnificent views. The location is peaceful and private and perfectly situated for exploring this beautiful island. The host was very hospitable. A very enjoyable stay.

  • "The cottage was in a great location, central to be able to visit both Lewis and Harris as well as having its own beautiful view."

The host was very friendly and welcoming with a lovely welcome basket of essentials and treats. The cottage was very comfortable and beautifully finished with great facilities. Go prepared with some food though as not many shops or places to eat on the island. There is a great takeaway pizza place (Crust) about 10 min drive away but you need to book online early in the morning to get a slot, but worth it

  • "An extremely comfortable, spotlessly clean, very well-equipped, and beautifully maintained cottage/bungalow with lovely views across Loch Eireasort and the South Lochs region."

The location is ideal for exploring both Harris and Lewis by car, yet it's only 20 minutes from Stornoway with its shops and restaurants. The basket of bread, butter, eggs, and milk, supplied by the host Marion, was very much appreciated. Rather oddly, the Sykes description of the location at Niss (Port of Nis) is completely wrong, as the cottage is in the heart of the Lochs region towards the south of Lewis, which if anything is a more scenic location. Highly recommended,

  • "Taigh Chailean is the perfect place to stay on a visit to Lewis and Harris."

There are wonderful views from the rooms both of the Lochs and the mountains. The house is beautifully decorated and the kitchen well equipped. Beds are perfect. The house is warm. It is centrally located for visiting all parts of the Islands. Marion (the host) is living nearby if any advice is needed. There was a generous basket of food awaiting our arrival. Sat Nav does not direct accurately to the right turn off for the house - so look out for the sign to Taigh Chailean on the brow of the hill on the main road through Laksay just before the trig point. Thank you for a wonderful week in your house.

  • "This cottage exceeded all expectations."

It was so well equipped and the soft furnishings and bedding were all of the highest standard. There was only two of this this time but we will definitely return with friends in the future. The only disappointment was the fact that the local inn which was quoted as being 1.5 miles away was in fact about 6 miles and closed. We would highly recommend anyone wishing to visit this lovely island to stay here. The owner was very pleasant and easy to deal with.

The cottage itself was absolutely wonderful. It had two large bedrooms each with a shower room ensuite. The living/dining/kitchen were all very comfortable and there was a third toilet/sink directly off the living area. It was very clean and clearly and been newly renovated. There was a lovely view of the water as well. Had everything we needed and a little gift basket of staples like bread, butter, eggs and milk were provided which was hugely appreciated. The location of the cottage was great in that we felt we were out enough to get peace and quiet but we could easily drive to all attractions. Highly recommend!!!

Beautiful house, so comfortable and clean, lots of interesting books and games. Really thoughtful milk, bread, eggs etc on arrival which were much appreciated. Lovely views and good location where everything on Lewis and Harris is no more than 1 hour 15 mins away. Some minor negatives, cable missing from DVD player (could’ve asked but wasn't a big deal) mattresses were very soft, better knives for food prep and a bigger saucepan would’ve been useful. We would love to stay again in the hope of better weather!

About the location

ISLE OF LEWIS

Stornoway 29 miles.

The area known as Ness (Port a Nis) is made up of a number of small villages situated on the most northerly part of the Isle of Lewis, and is the most north-westerly community in the European Union. Visitors to this remote and peaceful island will want to visit the lovely beaches and appreciate the unspoilt beauty of the area. The island is a great place to spot wildlife such as otters, seals, deer, whales and dolphins to name just a few. The men of Ness are famous for their Guga hunting activities, a tradition still carried on today and involves the capture of young gannet chicks for their meat which is considered a great delicacy. The locals also also still speak Gaelic and to most living in this area, English is a second language, although English is widely used. Ness has a pretty harbour that once flourished as fishing was very important to the area, and a small road from here will take you even further north to the famous Butt of Lewis Lighthouse. The Isle of Lewis is joined to the Isle of Harris some 65 miles south of Ness, and the whole area is a great place to tour and savour the unique atmosphere of the magical Outer Hebrides.
