  • "A lovely retreat."

The accommodation is not substantial but as described. Very comfortable all the same with the necessary amenities. The garden was very large and private. We were greeted by a generous welcome hamper and a warm greeting card from the owner - a great start to our week. Launceston is around a 10 minute drive away and there is easy access to many major routes to other parts of the county. The Bothy comes highly recommended.

  • "TV does no pick up basic channels, Free-sat is there but not working."

Bathroom in need of a up date in the shower department and the toilet seat is mismatched and doesn't fit properly. TLC needed with the balcony doors. but working. Ideal for going out most of the day and only coming back to sleep, but if you had a lot of time in the Bothy, comfort to relax and space would be an issue, especially if it was wet. Wall garden amazing.

Many thanks for your comments. I am sorry to learn that the property did not match your expectations. I am pleased to advise that the satellite dish has since been replaced when finding the route course of the problem. Either way, the property is equipped with a Smart TV which does have access to streaming services. I have not received any prior or further reviews suggesting any concerns over the TLC of the property but I always welcome useful criticism. Thank you again for your comments as I like to ensure all of my guests staying at The Bothy have a wonderful time. Best wishes, The owner of The Bothy. Property Owner

  • "We really enjoyed our much-needed week break at the Bothy."

We were very fortunate to have good weather throughout and the totally private and very extensive walled garden with multiple trimmed grass walkways proved to be extremely relaxing on the occasional days we spent there with the multitude of buzzards, combined with a very friendly local robin adding to the relaxing mix. On other days we explored this part of Cornwall which we had not visited before, including visits to the nearby Kit Hill (fantastic pan-Cornwall and Tamar views), the National Trust's Cote Hele House and Gardens (highly recommended), Tavistock, Rame Head and nearby coastline (truly fantastic views over Plymouth Sound), and elsewhere. Several good local inns also provided excellent lunchtime meals to keep us going on our days out! We have already recommended the Bothy to others.

  • "We spent a week at the Bothy in June 21, it’s situation is very quiet and relaxing."

You can sit on the balcony for breakfast and enjoy the views or stroll from the bedroom onto the terrace. You have the huge walled garden to yourself with a gazebo to spend a lazy afternoon. The Bothy suits ‘upside down’ living and is very nicely furnished. We had buzzards soaring overhead almost every day. We had a very enjoyable holiday at the Bothy. Two minor things for us could do with changing, the microwave put above the hob, and for the times you do watch TV a better position would be on the wall above the stairway. When we did contact our host with a small issue, the response was very quick and dealt with immediately.

  • "Our stay at the Bothy was really nice."

The property was extremely clean and tidy and all the facilities top notch. The only issue we had was that we found the mattress on the double bed to be quite uncomfortable and not supportive enough. So we didn’t sleep quite as well as we would have hoped. Otherwise everything was perfect. One minor suggestion could be the addition of a covered bike storage box outside against the wall to allow more than two bikes to be stored securely overnight and covered from the elements. I am a keen road cyclist so I ended up squeezing my bike into one of the storage rooms to keep it secure at night with our other bike left outside. Thanks for a great stay and we will be back again in the future!

The owner left a lovely welcoming basket. Spotted plenty of wildlife rabbits bats a bird of prey. The weather wasn’t on our side but you can’t predict the weather I would stay here again I love it

  • "A good place to stay for real peace and tranquillity."

The site is lovely and very secluded. We were able to explore an area of Cornwall that we hadn't really visited before. We were limited by Covid restrictions but managed to book National Trust gardens ahead of our visit and found that very useful. The main issue for us was the description of what was in the kitchen area. A combination microwave oven was listed but not the hob so until we got there we had no real idea what food we would be able to cook. The oven was very small and the cupboard space was very limited but we needed to cook and eat in perhaps more on this holiday because of Covid restrictions still in place. Under normal holiday conditions we would have found places to eat out each day. Everything considered this was a very welcome break and very relaxing week.

About the location

CALLINGTON

Tavistock 9 miles; Launceston 11.5 miles; Plymouth 14.6 miles.

Callington is a Cornish market town, rich in mining heritage and overlooked by Kit Hill, the highest point in the area, donated to the people of Cornwall by Prince Charles to celebrate the birth of Prince William. From the top of Kit Hill there are fabulous views across south-east Cornwall as far as Plymouth Sound. Callington is set in the heart of the Tamar Valley, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and offers a good selection of shops, inns and cafes, as well as being the home of Ginsters Cornish pasties. A few miles away, the quaint village of Calstock clings to the steep banks of the river Tamar and is dominated by the splendid Calstock Railway Viaduct, a giant 11-arched stone construction supporting one of Britain’s most picturesque branch lines running through the Tamar Valley. Other interesting places along the river are Cotehele, a beautiful historic house and gardens owned by the National Trust with a small quay and inn, and Morwhellam Quay, a theme park that staged a living history production for the BBC and where visitors can explore the rich mining heritage and watch blacksmiths, potters and craftsmen at work. The pannier market town of Tavistock is only nine miles from Callington and is well worth a visit on your way to a day’s walk on Dartmoor. A splendid base to explore south Cornwall and West Devon.
