  • "We spent five days in March at Rookwood Cottage and would highly recommend it."

The cottage was clean, warm and comfortable. The kitchen was very well equipped with quality tableware and cookware which made the preparation and eating of meals a pleasant experience. The beds were really comfy and warm and both the en suite and downstairs bathroom were perfectly clean and with good showers. There was milk in the fridge and a delicious cake on arrival which was most welcome. Madeline, the housekeeper was available by phone if we had any problems, but aside from a some advice re operating the TV (failing on our part) we didn't need to disturb her. Rookwood is located in a quiet village and we unfortunately missed the opening of the new village pub by a couple of days. I'm sure future guests will enjoy a drink or two there now it's up and running. We would definitely recommend Rookwood without hesitation.

Our only complaint was that the listing was not updated in a timely fashion to reflect the closure of the shop and pub. I discovered that by chance last October but was only notified by Sykes/owner in May of this year. Otherwise we loved our stay

  • "The interior of the propery is lovely, well equipped and maintained."

However, the front and rear outside areas are a disgrace. They are overgrown, dirty and in need of serious attention. The back garden is overgrown, full of weeds and dead leaves and you cannot even see the front door as the bushes are so overgrown. I have photographic evidence of this. You also need to change your advert to reflect the fact that the local pub and shop are no longer open. This renders the village quite lifeless in my opinion. The nearest proper shop is over 3 miles away (The Local Church is trying to provide essentials). We have not really enjoyed our stay.

Thank you for your feedback, the contents of which have been noted. We are in the process of taking updated photographs of the front and back courtyards of the cottage – the creepers on the front of the cottage have grown and a new photo is in order. The plantings in the back courtyard are now permanent plantings (mainly agapanthus) which are more water wise. Our housekeeper has informed us that there were self-seeding plants growing between the pavers but as most guests expressed a preference for no plants between the pavers, these have been removed. As far as the pub and shop go, the tiny and ancient Drewe Arms and the tiny shop within Drewsteignton have both closed. However, the beautifully situated Fingle Bridge Inn on the banks of the river Teign set within the Fingle Woods is within 1 mile of the cottage. The Fingle Woods is run by the Woodland and National Trusts and is crisscrossed with public footpaths, some of which can be accessed right in front of the cottage. Castle Drogo overlooks the Teign Gorge and can be accessed via this network of footpaths (as well as by road). Castle Drogo itself is 1.4 miles from the cottage and has a wonderful café. The small and picturesque market town of Chagford is 3.6 miles away and has a grocery store, a bakery, a florist, a wine shop, a delicatessen catering for picnics, a pharmacy, the well-known James Bowden & Son Hardware & Moorland Centre and several other shops and pubs including the Three Crowns. The cottage is also within the Waitrose online shopping delivery area. Drewsteignton is a small and quiet village with no big road running through it set within the Dartmoor National Park with all the Park has to offer. In our view, this is what makes Drewsteignton such a delightful place. Property Owner

  • "I think Rookwood is ok-ish (with a few notable issues) but it's hugely over priced for what it is and generally feels like the owners have done all they can to maximise their profits and not put any care into anything."

The photos make it look MUCH bigger than it is, and it's seen better days - I can't upload the pictures I took but the garden is not the flowery oasis you see in their pictures, it's a yard full of weeds and the smell of the oil tank in the corner wafting over you if you sit out there. The beds were incredibly uncomfortable - super soft and hard to lay flat on without rolling into the middle. You also have to arrive via some very narrow but busy roads so hard for driving, although the cottage itself is peaceful. The lounge is nice but despite them saying they always provide firewood, what they mean is only during some months of the year. Although you wouldn't expect to need it in July we did and so had the expense of buying some locally (we would have brought with us if we'd known), although there is central heating but part of the reason we'd paid extra for the cottage was because we like a fire. We didn't use the upstairs shower, as others have said, it clearly leaks as you can tell from the large stain on the carpet. As others have said, the shop is permanently closed and the pub is for sale so won't be available any time soon and should therefore be removed from the listing - rather than just putting a note on the page and leaving the bullets so if you're searching for somewhere with those facilities it'll still come up, this is very dishonest. And as others have said, we were told about this change very late on. The saving grace was the excellent housekeeper Maddy who not only kindly offered to post something I'd accidentally left behind, she also came and saved us when we got locked out the back as there was nothing to warn us the back door locks automatically if you go out. Thank you for your help Maddy.

Thank you for your feedback, the contents of which have been noted. The descriptions of the pub and shops have been updated to reflect that the tiny and ancient Drew Arms and the tiny shop within Drewsteignton have both closed. However, the beautifully situated Fingle Bridge Inn on the banks of the of the river Teign set within the Fingle Woods is within 1 mile of the cottage. We have taken up with our housekeeper the fact that you were not provided with a starter pack of wood for the woodburner and agree with you that this should be there even in July. Maddy usually contacts all our guests telephonically before their arrival to discuss their requirements regarding wood. Similarly, we will discuss with her your comments regarding weeds in the courtyard. We also agree that it is time to upgrade our photograph of the courtyard – the furniture and plantings have changed since that picture was taken. The cottage was completely renovated internally in 2019 by a professional designer with new flooring, a new kitchen, a remodelled family bathroom (with bath and shower) and all new furniture as well as the inclusion of the small en suite shower room. We know that the en suite is small but we felt it was better to have it than not to have it and the cottage is Grade II listed so it is not possible to have a more extensive en suite. The shower door in the en suite does seal if fully closed. The decision was made at that time to include a hotel quality king zip/link bed to accommodate those guests who prefer twin beds if necessary. We will review that decision and we are contemplating changing to a normal king bed in light of your criticisms. To conclude, we and our housekeeper Maddy have taken your negative comments on board. Drewsteignton is a small village but we think it is a delightful one. The last few miles of one’s journey does involve the driving on small country lanes but the fact that there are no big roads going through the village is one of the things, in our view, that makes it a special place. • "Good evening, I wish to make a complaint about inaccurate listing information, and deceitful communication."

When we booked the cottage, Rookwood, (March 23) our search criteria included local pub and shop. Drewsteighton had both, so we booked a 7 night stay in Rookwood. A very late notification email received 12th May informed us, the pub and shop had closed. Due to the short time frame before we were due to travel, (2nd June), my search for an alternative cottage offering the same facilities we required came back unsuccessful. We had no option to cancel without incurring full loss of all monies paid. So we had to go ahead with the holiday knowing we already had a big compromise on our preferences for amenities we could walk to. We left the property on Tuesday 6th, rather than Friday 9th, cutting short our stay due to not managing without the local facilities which left us remote and cut off. My complaint is that the pub and shop closed back in October 22, 5 months before our booking. Your reviews for Rookwood confirm this as you had other complaints about the same miss information posted on your website. Not only did you leave inaccurate information up, you also left it too late to inform us of these closures, for us to be able to rebook more appropriate accommodation for our needs. I have taken screenshots of reviews and replies, that I can send, but you can see them on your own website, confirming what I have said. The closures were in October 22, in March 23 these facilities were still listed, we were not informed till May 23, after the cut off period for cancellation without deductions had passed or enough time to rebook alternative. This is totally unacceptable and looks like planned miss advertisement to encourage holiday makers to book what has become a very remote cottage. I do expect to receive a reply back from you as soon as possible. Regards S Hinton

The cottage is well equipped for a holiday and is a comfortable base for exploring the area or just chilling out in. We were a family of four adults staying for 3 nights in May and had a great long weekend. Maddie the housekeeper had left milk and a cake for our arrival and our stay was over all too soon. What annoyed us was the fact that the pub closed last year and the shop not long after. Lucky the church has some tinned food and other necessary items, plus a fridge with butter bacon and sausages.. One day a week there are vegetables for sale. You need to rectify this in your description. NO PUB, NO SHOP. If I had known this before hand I’m not sure I would have booked.

Thank you for your feedback and bringing this to our attention, we are sorry that we were not made aware of the closure of the pub and shop. It has been confirmed that both are closed for the foreseeable future, as you mention there is a temporary shop set up at the back of the church for visitors and locals as a temporary measure. • "Beautiful cottage in a stunning village."

Unfortunately, the shop/postoffice and pub are currently shut which we would like to have been made aware of before arrival - a small note in the folder in the cottage was a bit late ! The cottage has all the comforts of home, however there was absolutely no storage in the kitchen as the drawers & cupboards were full of utensils and other things. The outside area was terrible and clearly hadn’t been weeded or looked at for a very long time. The weather wasn’t great but I wouldn’t have wanted to sit outside surrounded by weeds and dead plants anyway. It was a shame as the pictures on the website description show how it did look. The bedrooms were a really generous size but again let down by minimal storage - adding a dress rail to hang clothes in each room would be perfect. The beds were all very comfy with good quality bedding. Everywhere was spotlessly clean. The bathrooms were beautiful, the en-suite was very small but that added to the charm. We walked to the nearest pub - Fingle Bridge which was amazing but do check opening times as it’s not always open. There is parking by the pub but this gets very busy with walkers, otherwise it’s an extremely steep hill or across a muddy field. A community shop has been set up in the church which a lovely local explained to us and they also have a small produce market in there on a Tuesday & Thursday. Parking wasn’t a problem we parked by the church wall which was a 2 minute walk away or there was plenty of parking in the village square or car park.

Many thanks for providing your feedback following your stay at Rookwood. We were unaware of the closure of the local pub and shop and have now amended our listing to ensure all future visitors are made aware of this. We have spoken with the housekeeper regarding the kitchen cupboards and to the owner regarding the outside area. Despite these issues we are delighted you enjoyed your visit to Rookwood.
