The location is beautiful with great walking and biking from the door. So so lovely, we didn’t want to leave.

  • "We had a lovely weekend at Kentmere Hall Bank Barn."

The Barn has everything you need for a comfortable stay. The living area and bedrooms are cosy and a perfect space to relax after a day outdoors. There are lovely personal touches with books, games and CDs. The boot room is great and you can walk straight in and out from walking routes. We stayed over a very snowy weekend and Jim was a great host checking in on us.

Thank you Anna - I am very glad you enjoyed your stay. Jim Property Owner

The house is stylish, warm and comfortable and we love how remote and peaceful it is with an abundance of walks and trail runs starting right from the front door. Thanks Jim for letting us stay - another week of beautiful family memories in the bag.

  • "Gorgeous property nestled away in quiet Kentmere with direct access to the Garburn Pass, Kentmere Horseshoe, etc."

The property was actually bigger than the pictures led us to believe and very tastefully finished. Lovely evenings spent in front of the log burner. Internet worked well throughout for a couple and working remotely (24 mbps). Best to stop for supplies on the way up!

So pleased you had a good time. See you again soon. Best wishes Property Owner

  • "Magical. Recently fitted out to a high standard with a stylish blend of modern and period furniture, fittings and tableware."

All mod cons including washer dryer, dishwasher, underfloor heating, great showers and good cooking pans. Wifi worked fine for browsing and wifi calling but mobile signal was not reliable on its own. There is also a landline for emergencies. Remote location at the head of the Kentmere valley with beautiful scenery. Fells up behind the house, flat fields with sheep down the valley. 30 minute drive to Troutbeck, or 90-120 min hike over the hill. 10 minute drive to Staveley, which has a refurbished brewery venue, a butcher, a pub, and a well provisioned Spar store open late. Accurate directions. Worth adding that when you turn left from Kentmere Church, there is a small sign saying "no parking" on the verge of the turning itself, and that the road turns to gravel road briefly. The key collection process was no bother. Jim Sharp, the owner, rang to check we were all OK. He has provided great local recommendations including hiking routes in the information pack in the cottage. My only flags would be that the sliding doors between the bedrooms and the main living area are quite thin, so the first person up may wake the others. Worked fine for us as siblings and a parent, but might be a consideration for family groups. Also to flag that the Technics stereo has an aux jack but no aux cable, so bring that with you if you want to connect. Overall, a magical stay. We can't wait to return

Thanks for the feedback. Very glad you had a good stay. Property Owner

  • "Fantastic property in a stunning location."

Five of us had an amazing week; guests could, if they wanted, leave the car for the duration of their entire stay and just enjoy the numerous walks (easy, moderate and challenging) which can be embarked upon from Kentmere without ever driving out of the valley. The stylish accommodation was faultlessly comfortable, can't recommend it highly enough. Shops in Staveley (around 10/15 mins away by car) for any forgotten provisions!

Thank you John. Hope to welcome you back again. Best wishes. Property Owner

This won’t suit everyone as the property is remote and no pub or shops within walking distance, but there is plenty of choice of great independent shops and a fantastic pub and chippy in Staveley! A few comments that I hope help: 1. the cottage details said all fuel was included, however there is a note suggesting a charge for logs used on burner - some clarification might be helpful 2. We found the communication with Sykes cottages company difficult - lots of instructions via email and text reminding us of the rules - however there are limited options to contact you - might you review your customer service from the customer perspective?

The owner was very helpful and responsive when we had any queries. Plenty of practical guidance for walks and things to do. The barn was well decorated with a great vibe with lots of CDs and interesting books available in case the weather turned. The log burner is a key star of the show. We went there for an annual family holiday and the barn was a great choice to connect with each other but still be able to have your own quiet space when needed. We’ll be back.

Initially were a bit skeptical about the accommodation as it was very isolated (no phone signal) and didn't look as welcoming on the outside. However, upon entering we came to find a cozy, clean and colourful home with all the necessary facilities. Along with beautiful views of the landscape presented to us.

  • "The barn is beautifully designed and very clean."

Lovely location if you know what to expect. However, I wouldn't recommend for young families as the bedrooms are only separated from the main living area by sliding doors so soundproofing is non existent between bedrooms/kitchen and living area. I'd stay again but not with young children.

  • "A lovely place to stay in an idyllic lakeland location."

The accomodation was a pleasure to be in and kitted out very well - good wifi. Loads of nice walks available nearby and for those who like a challenge, it is ideally placed for the Kentmere Horseshoe. This is a remote location (no mobile signal) and 4 miles of narrow roads to the nearest shop etc. So to enjoy, be prepared in advance.

The property

Standing at the head of the Kentmere Valley, surrounded by some of the most beautiful scenery in the Lake District, Kentmere Hall is built around a defensive pele tower dating back to the early 14th century.

Here you’ll find a superb 21st century RIBA shortlisted barn conversion of the adjacent Bank Barn.

With all the living space across the ground floor, and beautiful open plan living, kitchen and dining space, your group will have lots of space to socialise, be together and make happy memories.

You’ll arrive in Kentmere along the narrow lane that winds its way up to the head of the valley and the village of Kentmere with its historic church and whitewashed cottages scattered across the hillside.

The final approach is down a narrow drive which leads to the house, where you can pull up right outside the front door.

The front door opens to the welcoming open plan kitchen, dining/living room with beams and slate floors.

Comfortable sofas and armchairs are arranged around the cosy log burner and TV.

(No live TV available due to reception.

However, viewing through the internet is fine, iPlayer, ITV player, Channel 4 etc or your own Netflix and Amazon TV).

The family dining table sits at the heart of the room making it the ideal place for relaxing mealtimes, or the place to gather in the morning over breakfast to plan your day.

The contemporary fitted kitchen, with beautiful granite worktops, is well equipped with everything you need.

Three pretty bedrooms lead off the living accommodation, all with sliding doors to maximise the use of space and light and all with views to the surrounding countryside.

A double room with en-suite bathroom; a double or 2’6” twin bedroom (please specify your choice when you make your booking) or a 3’ twin bedded room.

A spacious shower room with a walk-in shower, basin and WC.

The utility/boot room has plenty of space for your outdoor gear, and drying wet clothes, and is also home to the washing machine and tumble dryer.

From here the back door from here opens to the great outdoors and a gravelled area with outdoor dining furniture where you can relax.

Kentmere Hall Bank Barn adjoins Kentmere Hall.

Kentmere Hall won a RIBA North West Award 2021 and a RIBA National Award 2021, see below: https://www.architecture.com/awards-and-competitions-landing-page/awards/riba-regional-awards/riba-north-west-award-winners/2021/pele-tower-house The Kentmere Valley is a narrow valley surrounded by a horseshoe of high fells, to the east of Lake Windermere.

The scenery is breath-taking, the atmosphere blissfully tranquil and the location within surprisingly easy reach of Lake Windermere and other highlights of the Lake District.

But when popular Lakes holiday destinations are teeming at bank holidays and school holidays, the Kentmere Valley remains relatively untouched.

The Kentmere Valley is approached via a small country lane from the village of Staveley.

Staveley is a pretty little village between Kendal and Windermere; a popular hub for walkers and cyclists – head to Staveley Mill Yard for lots of great cafes, bakeries, and a brewery and beer hall.

Staveley's Eagle & Child pub is also a superb traditional Lakeland pub.

The Kentmere Valley is a popular location for a Lake District walking holiday, and you'll find many varied routes to enjoy from your doorstep.

Mountain bikers and rock climbers find their high points too!
