  • "Recently stayed at Nursery cottage the hostess was brilliant nothing any trouble whatsoever."

Weather wasn't particularly good as expected given the time of year, our main reason for visiting St.bees was to see our son and family with their newest arrival. On inclement days it meant lazy days and relaxation in a comfy snug home..nothing wrong with that! Ten out of ten

We had a great week at Nursery cottage, 5 stars from us. Location is spot on for the area, double whammy coast and lake District, couldn't be better.Yes we had great weather, which was a bonus, ate in both pubs the Manor and the Queen's couldn't really split them for food and service, The manor was 18 steps nearer the cottage

  • "Beautiful old cottage which has the perfect blend of character with modern, spotlessly clean and up to date facilities."

Situated in the middle of the village with good pubs, a small shop and even the railway station only a few yards from the door, with the beach only a short walk away and the Western fells and lakes a short drive, we found this to be the perfect base for touring the beautiful area, yet perfect for drinks/eating out or in on our return in the evening. The off road parking out front is ideal for normal mid sized vehicles but may be a squeeze to get into for larger ones. Lots of thought, care and love by the owner, Jane, has gone into making the cottage a cosy, well equipped and welcoming place, we went as a couple but it could easily cope with four people. The photos on the site are very accurate but can't fully convey how cosy and comfortable the place feels when you walk in. Thoroughly enjoyed our week and we wouldn't hesitate to return or to recommend.

  • "A brilliant holiday cottage!"

Super clean. Superb attention to detail. Every detail for a great and easy stay was thought of, from lots of hooks to a tumble dyer, from loads of tea towels to amazing bathroom towels. Very friendly but not interfering hosts. A crucial parking space and an easy walk to the beach. A shop next door and a train station for easy access to the rest of the coast - but next to the Lakes for walking. A real find !!

Our 10-year-old son described it as "Fancy, old fashioned and modern" we'd add very clean and comfortable to that description too - we miss it already.

Continuing through, you'll be delighted by the rustic interior of the open-plan kitchen/diner, beautifully-appointed with exposed stone work and a warming woodburning stove nestled within an inglenook fireplace, inviting you to snuggle in on an armchair and escape into the pages of a good book.

In the morning, prepare for a new day with a leisurely soak in the tub, or if you prefer, make use of the overhead shower for an invigorating rinse.

Step out the door and into the heart of St Bees, where you'll find a small selection of eateries, including local favourite, The Manor, set in a rustic 17th century inn, serving traditional home-cooked meals and refreshing cask ales.

Test your swing with a round of golf at the 9-hole course, or join the Coast to Coast Walk, a 182-mile hike created by Alfred Wainwright, as it crosses the Lake District National Park from the Irish Sea towards Yorkshire.

The Georgian town of Whitehaven is within easy reach, boasting an exciting array of heritage waiting to be discovered at Whitehaven Castle, dating back to 1769, and The Beacon Museum.

If that's not your thing, enjoy a leisurely stroll around the marina, soaking in the scenic views across the water, or take the tour around The Rum Story, a recreation of an 18th-century Caribbean island, displaying the origins of the towns dark slave trade.

Lace up your walking boots and head off on foot to explore the varying landscapes of the picturesque Lake District National Park, boasting open moorland, fells, woodland and of course, lakes, with walking and cycling routes to suit all abilities.

Avid outdoor adventurers can tackle the climb to the summit of Scafell Pike, the highest mountain in England, stretching unspoilt views across to the Mourne Mountains in Northern Ireland on a clear day.

About the location

ST BEES

Whitehaven 5 miles.

St. Bees is an historic seaside village on the west coast of Cumbria with a Norman priory and Elizabethan public school, as well as a shop, post office and old traditional pubs. It's an ideal base for exploring the western Lake District and Cumbrian coast, and is the start of the famous Wainwright coast to coast walk. St. Bees Head is the only major sea cliff between Wales and Scotland and is the only Heritage coastline in Cumbria. There is a fine beach and many wonderful walks are available along the clifftops, which are also home to one of England’s most important seabird colonies. There is also a nine-hole golf course in the village. Nearby Whitehaven, an elegant Georgian port, and the spectacular western Lakes, are more than worthy of a visit. Muncaster Castle is 8 miles away, as is the Eskdale and Ravenglass miniature railway. Cockermouth, the birth place of Wordsworth, and Keswick on Derwentwater are also within easy driving distance.
