Looking to climb Dove Crag at the weekend with my lad is it safe. He's done snowdon, scafell, High Raise, Red screes. Just struggling to find routes to take with him. Whats this cave all about as well..
I'm assuming you mean the Dove Crag above Ambleside on the way to Fairfield, with the Priest's Hole halfway up the face.
You asked if it's safe. If you really want to go to the Priest's Hole, then no. You need to visit it with someone who knows the route. Stray and you can find yourself on dangerous ground. People have slipped off and MRT then have the task of retrieving a body.
The Fairfield Horseshoe goes over the top of Dove Crag, but I think you are looking for something with some interest and a bit of a scramble?
I suggest in that case:
Catbells has easy scrambling and awesome views. It's always a good walk.
Eagle Crag has steep ground, ledges and looks absolutely horrendous on the approach! Given the rain recently I'd skip the out and back to Ullscarf.
Bowfell, via Worneyside Force, Hell Gill, and the Great Slab is a good meander, with plenty of interest on the way. The climbers traverse to get to the Great Slab is exposed and not a place to trip up as you can expect with the name, but with care it's safe enough. Is it totally safe for everybody, no. It's only as safe as you make it.
Hope this gives you some ideas.
