Always nice to do a walk straight from the front door of your accommodation, even better when it includes a bit of everything including lakes, gills, waterfalls, moorland, great views and even a bit of sunshine.

Starting with a walk through town we headed down to the lake, taking in the views from Friar's Crag and Calfclose bay before crossing the road into Great Wood. Slightly perturbed by the signs offering a 'steep' route and a 'gradual' route up to Walla Crag that would apparently take 2 hours we headed off towards Cat Gill which included a couple of small waterfalls.

We were soon up on the Crag which offered incredible views of the lake and many of the Northern and North Western Fells with the top of Skiddaw showing a dusting of snow. Just when things couldn't get any better we bagged the prime picnic spot for lunch (sausage roll, pork pie, salt and vinegar hula hoops, orange club, apple (uneaten), hot brew).

We took the scenic route back to town via Castlerigg, crossing a few streams and encountering a few highland coos.

Top day out!
