Walking Safely

WalkLakes recognises that hill walking, or walking in the mountains, is an activity with a danger of personal injury or death. Participants in these activities should be aware of and accept these risks and be responsible for their own actions.

If you're new to hill walking we recommend downloading and reading Stay Safe and Enjoy the Fells (Adobe PDF, 869KB), a leaflet by the Lake District Search and Mountain Rescue Association in conjunction with Cicerone Press. It's applicable to hill walking anywhere in Great Britain, not just in the Lake District. Why not print a copy off and keep it in your rucksack?

The Association also produced this video in 2008, the 75th anniversary of mountain rescue in the UK, about mountain rescue organisations and mountain safety which is well worth a watch.

You might also find these mountain safety videos from the Met Office useful - an excellent set of videos on aspects of hill walking safety at all times of year.
