I did this walk in November, as well as Little Mell Fell and Great Mell Fell.
The two Mells weren't particularly enjoyable to be honest, but they're ticked off the list now!
However, I loved the walk up Gowbarrow, following the steady incline on Ullswater Way alongside Ullswater where you get the best views:
It was a cloudy day, which was a bit of a shame, but gave the lake a really silky silver sheen to it. With very little wind it, was almost pristine.
Wainwright described the summit as "drab"! Which I think is a little unfair, but it is true that the best views are found on the way up, rather than at the summit.
We came back across Gowbarrow Park, which was perhaps a little unwise as it was very muddy and boggy. Getting back on Ullswater Way would have perhaps been the best route back down to the falls?
