Some Walks Near Grasmere

The small village of Grasmere located in the heart of the Lakes is an ideal base for walkers, with a wide variety of hills and surrounding countryside there is going to be something suitable for everyone. The lakes of the same name Grasmere, sometimes appended with Water or Lake to distinguish it from the village, lies just to the south.

Today we're looking at three of our walks starting in or near Grasmere village, rated by us as one, two and three "fells" in order of difficulty.

Grasmere itself is closely associated with William Wordsworth and you will find the Wordsworth Trust Shop and Dove Cottage, where William lived for eight years, on the edge of the village. Our first walk, A circuit of Grasmere, takes you past both of these places so do pause to take a look if you've time (and they're not being overwhelmed by coach loads of tourists!).

The rest of the walk takes you along a short section of the old 'coffin road' from Rydal in the days when St Oswald's in Grasmere was the only parish church with a graveyard. A short section of stony paths drops down to the A591 to cross and there follows a pleasant walk through the parkland and woods alongside the River Rothay to Grasmere, the lake.

Grasmere the village can be seen across the lake, as can the fells that ring this pretty vale. Around the shore line is a good path, and then all too soon you have to leave it to climb up to Red Bank Road. It is a short walk along the road back into the village.

Our second walk, Loughrigg Fell from Rydal, starts at Rydal but has excellent views down across Grasmere Water from Loughrigg, which is one of our favourite little fells. This walk also takes you to Rydal Cave, which is well worth pausing to explore inside.

Codale Tarn and Tarn Crag

Our final walk, Easedale Tarn, Codale Tarn, and Tarn Crag, starts in Grasmere village again. This is more of a challenging walk being 13km (8 miles) with 510m of ascent but it's worth it for the reward of Codale Tarn and Tarn Crag.

These are just a few of the walks we have near Grasmere. For a full list visit this page.
