Screen Shots

Sometimes we may ask you to send a "screen shot", a copy of what you're seeing on your screen. Typically we would ask you to do this if you're experiencing something with our web site which we don't see from our PCs.

Windows 8 and 10

You do this using two keys:

  1. The Windows key. This is usually labelled with a Windows logo and there are normally two of them on the bottom row of your keyboard to the left and right of the space bar.
  2. The print screen key on your keyboard. It is probably labelled either PrtSc or PrintScreen and may also be labelled SysRq

On most full size keyboards it's the key to the right of F12 and above Insert

To capture a screen shot hold down the Windows key and press PrtSc. The shot will be saved in the "Screenshots" within your "Pictures" folder.

Now mail the file to us.

Windows 7

You do this using the print screen button on your keyboard. It is probably labelled either PrtSc or PrintScreen and may also be labelled SysRq

On most full size keyboards it's the key to the right of F12 and above Insert

This is how you do it:

  1. Press PrtSc
  2. Open Paint (it's in the Accessories menu on Windows XP)
  3. Hold down Ctrl and press V (or use the menu and click on "Edit|Paste" if you prefer)
  4. Hold down Ctrl and press S (or click on "File|Save")
  5. Save the file with a type of either PNG or a JPEG (but not a BMP)
  6. Close Paint

The file will probably end up in the "My Pictures" folder inside "Pictures" unless you specify a different directory in the save dialogue.

Now mail the file to us.

Apple Mac

  1. Hold down Shift and Cmd and then press 4
  2. A crosshair will appear on the screen. Move it to where you want to start the screenshot, then drag to select an area.
  3. When you've selected the area you want, release your mouse or trackpad button.
  4. You will find the screenshot as a PNG file on your desktop.

Now mail that file to us.

Android - except version Pie

On versions before Android Pie this can be a bit fiddly: you normally need to hold down the physical power and volume down buttons.

If you press power too soon the display will switch off; press volume down too soon and your screenshot may be marred by an onscreen volume slider.

After a few seconds the screen will flash and a notification will appear in the drop-down bar at the top of the screen, giving you options to delete, share or edit the image. You can also access the screenshot from your Gallery.

Now mail the screenshot to us.

Android Pie

Press and hold the power button and a dialogue will appear with three options one of which is "Screenshot". Tap that and a notification will appear in the drop-down bar at the top of the screen, giving you options to delete, share or edit the image. You can also access the screenshot from your Gallery.

Now mail the screenshot to us.

iPad/iPhone

The procedure is similar to Android only this time you pressing the sleep/wake/power button (at the top-right of the device) and the Home button (below the screen) at the same time.

The screenshot will then appear in your Photos app.

Now mail the screenshot to us.

Chromebook

Hold down ctrl and press the "Switch to your next tab or window" key aka F5. A screenshot will be saved in your "Downloads" folder.

Alternatively hold down shift as well as ctrl when pressing F5 and you will be able to select an area of the screen, although we find that hard to do without using a mouse.

Now mail the screenshot to us.
