Sharing GPXs

We have been making some changes to the GPS mapping app. The most obvious one is that the links at the bottom on the route1 editing box (and also the corresponding track2 box) are now icons. Here's me planning a route up Latrigg to illustrate that:

The first two are the download as a GPS file (which is available to everyone) and as a KML file (which is only for supporters). On the right is the "view in 3D" option which again is only for supporters.

We've now added a new option, again only for supporters for now, which lets you share the route or track you have loaded. Click on that and then, a a minimum, you get a URL which you can copy and share, or the app will help you share that URL as an email.

If you're a device which supports sharing more generally, like an tablet or a ChromeBook, then you can also use whatever share options that offers.

The recipient can see the GPX without any special software as this feature uses our new mobile app.

Beth find this very useful when she goes out without me. Instead of having to download her route as a GPX onto her PC and then send me an email with that as an attachment she can now share the route in one simple step from the app.

This is very new and although we're very pleased with it we'd value your thoughts, either as comments to this post or .

  1. A route describes where you are intending to go, point by point. For more information click here.
  2. A track records where you have been and when you were there. For more information click here.
