Hills walked:
Tarn Crag (Easedale) (Wainwright, Birkett, Fellranger, and Synge)
Date started:24/05/2024
Distance:13.4 km or 8.3 miles
Ascent:567m or 1860ft
Descent:568m or 1864ft
Start OSGB:NY335095
Time taken:5:25
Naismith:3:38

I parked in the lay-by near Mill Bridge and followed the route of the Coast to Coast path into Far Easedale through the outskirts of Grasmere. Crossing Stythwaite Steps I headed up the East ridge of Tarn Crag. Good views down to Easedale Tarn and across to Helm Crag from the ridge. I wasn’t very hopeful of getting a clear summit as the cloud was down but some encouraging breaks saw me carry on and when I reached the top the cloud base was above me. A steep footpath took me down to the shore of Easedale Tarn. From the tarn I followed the lovely Sour Milk Gill path back down to Grasmere with spectacular waterfalls all the way. Your detailed account of the hike up Tarn Crag, especially the changing weather and scenic waterfalls, provides a vivid picture of the experience.
