I was parked in a lay-by just outside the village which was handy as it was closer to my start at Town Head. It’s a steep haul up Steel Fell but with a steady gradient and good views back to Grasmere and over to Helm Crag it wasn’t long before I was stood on the summit with good views down to Thirlmere as well as back to Grasmere. Rounding the head of lovely Greenburn I reach Calf Crag which has an airy feel to it dropping off into Far Easedale. The knobbly ridge was followed to Gibson Knott which has superb views of the valley and over to Helm Crag. Helm Crag, a popular walk from Grasmere has interesting rock features like ‘The Lion and The Lamb’ and ‘The Howitzer’ to explore. I turn back on myself and follow a pleasant zig zag path down into Greenburn and back to the start.
