From the car park I headed straight up Stickle Ghyll using the left hand path all the way this time, finding it much easier than crossing the bridge and the having to cross back over the Ghyll further up. Had a break at Stickle Tarn to admire the views and then crossed the boggy ground leading to Blea Rigg. The bumpy and indistinct in places ridge leads on to Sergeant Man which was a busy little top. Then the vast expanse of slowly rising grass took me up to Hign Raise, the centre of Lakeland with magnificent views all around. Another squelchy path on grass led back towards the Langdale Pikes and the top of Thunacar Knott which also concluded my walk through Wainrights’s Book Three. A few weeks ago I went down the rather knee crunching Thorn Crag path but chose the Pike Howe path on this occasion which proved to be more dramatic and easier underfoot after the initial steep section down through Dungeon Ghyll. A pleasant walk back to the car park followed with lovely views down Great Langdale.
