Not the best of starts to this one: roadworks outside Newby Bridge (on a Saturday, in August?), heaving car park at Tarn Hows (£8 to park for 4 hours) and lots of selfie taking tourists.
However the crowds quickly dissipated as nobody wants to venture more than half a mile from their car or a cafe and we were quickly into the woods and waterfalls.
After crossing the road we discovered the beautiful Yew Tree Tarn where we stopped for lunch.
Steeply up the gill before emerging onto the rocky outcrops on Holme Fell covered in colourful heather.
The top wasn't immediately obvious and we had a bit of a wander around amongst the heather and a few bogs before discovering what was hopefully the top (the cairn isn't the Wainwright top, it's the rocky outcrop 50m further on to the South overlooking Coniston) which afforded a lovely view of Coniston.
We retraced our steps back to Tarn Hows which was by now almost devoid of people taking selfies.
