Time taken:3:51

Having climbed Wansfell Pike many years ago before I knew about the Wainwrights off we went to climb Wansfell / Baystones.

The climb up to the Pike was (much) steeper than I remember but we pushed on looking forward to a nice steady yomp over to the Wainwright top. I hadn't actually told the other half that this was the plan until we reached the pike but I reassured her that it would be an easy stroll over to Wainwright's summit.

The steady yomp however turned into a boggy / fiddly / up and downy kind of walk. Not at all what I'd expected. It was also further than anticipated.

Despite not seeing another soul for the trek over we somehow managed to arrive at the cairn at the exact same moment as another couple who proceeded to faff around and spoil our photos. Nevermind, it was time for lunch, so we hunkered down behind the wall to eat (terrible sandwich, salt and vinegar hula hoops, crunchie).

Returning to the cairn the clag had now come in and spoiled the Windermere views.

We retraced our steps down but diverted to the fancy looking 'Force' cafe on the way back to town. Service was terribly slow meaning I had to add some time on to the car which was parked at Waterhead which cost me an extra £6.

All in all, a mixed day on the fells.

I was fortunate to do that walk a couple of winters ago when it had been -10 overnight so the ground was frozen solid!
