Swirl How (Wainwright, Birkett, Hewitt, Nuttall, HuMP, Clem, Fellranger, Synge, Sim, and Tump)
Grey Friar (Wainwright, Birkett, Hewitt, Nuttall, Fellranger, Synge, Sim, and Tump)
Date started:16/11/2025
Distance:9.7 km or 6.0 miles
Ascent:609m or 1998ft
Descent:605m or 1985ft
Start OSGB:NY283032
Time taken:4:17
Naismith:2:57

I parked the van just below the top of the pass so had a warm up 300ft of ascent to get to the top. The path heads up the fellside to Wet Side Edge before following the ridge to the top of Great Carrs. I dropped down to visit the memorial site of the WWII bomber that crashed before rejoining the ridge taking me to Swirl How. In clear weather the path to Grey Friar is fairly obvious and unmissable and there are magnificent views from its summit of the Scafell and Coniston Fells. Retraced my steps to Wet Side Edge but avoided a return Great Carrs, dropping off from the ridge back down to Wrynose.
