Hills walked:
Green Crag (Wainwright, Birkett, HuMP, sub Marilyn, Clem, Fellranger, Synge, and Tump)
Date started:29/12/2025
Distance:9.2 km or 5.7 miles
Ascent:535m or 1755ft
Descent:535m or 1755ft
Start OSGB:NY191010
Time taken:4:30
Naismith:2:44

Started at the Woolpack Inn and headed down to the 17th century Doctor Bridge. The river Esk was clear as crystal and just after Low Birker I picked up one of the old peat tracks that took me steadily up to one of the stone peat shelters that dot Eskdale. A boggy tramp took me past Crook Crag and up to Green Crag. Great views to the Scafells, not so great to Sellafield! Returned via Low Birker Tarn and Birker Force waterfall. Thanks for your pic of the old peat hut. At a glance, it looks as if it still has a bit of a thatched roof on it - but then that made me think that this was pretty much what they would have looked like. I imagine they were roughly thatched with bracken.

I've always enjoyed Green Crag, but I've previously approached it from the Keppel Crag side. I'll try your route next time I'm over that way - it looks interesting.
