We did this as part of the three peaks challenge so we decided to do the "easy" route. So instead of going via Mickledore, we went left at the Y junction. It was tough! And with so much rain and cloud, we didn't have wonderful views to soothe the pain! I would recommend the Mickledore route - we felt it would have been easier and more dramatic (I did the route via Mickledore a few weeks ago). Well worth doing if the weather is clear
Hi peteandsue. The trouble with going via Mickledore as a general recommendation is that many folk find the scree a slog and the gully scary. Not to mention problems of further erosion. Finding the way through the boulder field to the summit is quite tricky. Whereas Hollow Stones is relatively straight forward, its follow the 'motorway' to a major extent, and there are more people about. But I agree if you are up to it Mickledore is just fantastic.
I agree Beth. You're absolutely right. 20 of use did the walk and everyone remarked how hard it was....it's an average gradient of over 10% so steeper than Ben Nevis or Snowdon. To me it's one of those mountains that's best to be tackled on a good clear day when the views make up for the toughness.
