This route heads up the Afon Llafar valley giving good views of Ysgolion Duon (Black Ladders) at its head before heading up the valley side to summit Yr Elen. It then skirts round Carnedd Llewelyn to join the main track up to the summit of Carnedd Dafydd where good views are had over the Glyders to the Snowdon massif. Dropping off the main path to the north west, the going is steep at first but eases onto the Mynydd Du ridge which is followed back to the start.
