Fred Whitton Challenge

The Lake District is gearing up for this year's Fred Whitton Challenge cycle ride on Sunday, 11th May. This gruelling 112 mile sportive challenge ride around the Lake District is held in memory of Fred Whitton who, until his untimely death at the age of 50 in 1998, was an extremely popular member of the Lakes Road Club.

This year is starts and finishes at Grasmere and, as you can see from our map, the route passes through much of the Lake District including Ambleside, the A592 and Kirkstone Pass, the A66 into Keswick from Penrith, Keswick itself, the B5289 along the side of Derwent Water, Buttermere, Whinlatter, the end of Ennerdale Water, Eskdale and Hardknott and Wrynose Passes.

This is not like the Tour of Britain event, it's not a race with a rolling road block, but you will encounter a lot more cyclists than normal on your travels so you should allow for this in your plans if you will be in Cumbria that day and please be patient and wait until it's safe to overtake.

And, if you are coming to the Lakes for the event, remember that our room finder has details of accommodation of all types and at a wide variety of prices which should be able to find you a bed, both before and after the event.

The full route map, including a profile, is available online in various formats.
