Extending the Lake District & Yorkshire Dales National Parks

The Campaign to Protect Rural England, Friends of the Lake District, Campaign for National Parks, Open Spaces Society, Ramblers Association, John Muir Trust, Wainwright Society, and the Yorkshire Dales Society are all supporting plans to extend the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales National Parks.

A public consultation is currently running on plans to extend the National Parks but if you want to respond you've only got another ten days to do so because it will run until 16th March 2012. The majority of local people and businesses (68-75%) have already voiced their support for the extension areas over the last two years. The existing boundaries exclude beautiful, inspiring areas of land between the Lakes and Dales that justify national park status.

The Yorkshire Dales National Park extended boundary would include: The northern Howgill Fells, Wild Boar Fell, Mallerstang and part of the Orton Fells; and Middleton, Barbon, Casterton and Leck Fells, part of Firbank Fell, part of the Lune Valley and fells to the west.

The Lake District National Park extended boundary would include: Birkbeck Fells Common, Bretherdale, Borrowdale, Whinfell, Grayrigg and Dillicar Commons and adjacent land; and Helsington Barrows to Sizergh Fell and part of the Lyth Valley.

The Campaign to Protect Rural England has a web page with more information and a web form to help you respond to the consultation.
