Fewer calls to Lake District Mountain Rescue in 2011

The annual report of the Lake District Search and Mountain Rescue Association (LDSAMRA) brings news of a 29% drop in call outs compared to 2010 with 424 incidents compared to nearly 600 in the previous year. This follows a 50% increase over the previous five years.

The highest number was for 99 climbers tripping, 84 after falls, 64 people getting lost and 22 becoming cragfast. Other call outs included one avalanche, 25 walkers collapsing, 39 missing and five reports of flares being used.

The teams helped 237 injured people: 43 had head injuries, 46 suffered ankle problems, 14 spine injuries and 17 hand or wrist.

The number of people killed on the fells also dropped significantly, by 43% with 17 deaths recorded in 2011. The majority, 10, were hill walkers.
