Skiddaw

Skiddaw is considered to be the oldest mountain in the Lake District, comprised of a specific sort of slate first found on Skiddaw and eventually named after the mountain: Skiddaw Slate, which is a sedimentary rock (if you remember your geology lessons from school?!). Much of the rest of the Lake District is quite different mostly being volcanic rock.

From the southern point of the Skiddaw summit ridge fans out the ridges of Carl Side on the south east, and Skiddaw Little Man on the south west.

There are numerous routes of ascent, the most popular being from Keswick taking in Little Man as well, round to the less frequented northern slopes, or the not-very-tree like Skiddaw Forest to the east.
