Top Ten Bagged Hills

Back when we first created this site we were keen to hold details of all the hills in the British Isles (as defined by the Database of British and Irish hills) so every hill in that database has its own page with details about it, a map showing its location, and a photo if we have one. So, for example, click on Latrigg and you're taken to its page.

One of the things we also did was that if you're registered and logged in then, when you view a hill page, you can record when you climbed (or "bagged") it. You can do the same thing semi-automatically if you use a GPS and upload a GPX track of your walk to our GPS mapping app.

On the hill page it then shows a list of everyone else who's bagged the hill and how many times if it's more than once.

We've been offering this for over twelve years now so some hills have built up a quite impressive list of people who've bagged it. So we've now modified the hill pages to show totals. So going back to Latrigg as of this morning 374 walkers registered on our site have bagged it a grand total of 575 times. Some go up quite often, like Petemoss who's been up 17 times and Paulpatty who's been up 18 times, which is why we've got two totals for each hill.

This lead us on to wondering which hill had been bagged the most times so we've looked in our database and here's a top ten.

PosNameTimes
10Haystacks434
9Skiddaw507
8Blencathra - Hallsfell Top509
7Scafell Pike518
6Loughrigg Fell520
5Scout Scar542
4The Old Man of Coniston569
3Latrigg575
2Helvellyn680
1Cat Bells755

The list is generally unsurprising, although I confess I would have expected Scafell Pike to do a little better, but the outlier is Scout Scar. It's a nice enough hill, as you'll find out if you do our walk A Scout Scar Amble, and "The Mushroom" is interesting, but 569 times seemed extraordinary.

And then I went to the Scout Scar page and, as of today ScoutScarShuffler, has bagged it 498 times! Which explains their username if nothing else.

Anyway we've made some new discoveries today and I hope we've encouraged you to log the hills you bag, be they in the Lake District or elsewhere (Ben Nevis for example has been bagged 139 times by 106 different walkers).
